Milk Powder Barfi – Sweets for Diwali

Three ingrediants for a wonderful sweet..How easy it could be...I know that diwali is one of the hectic season for everyone...We will be busy in getting things ready and lots of confusion in deciding what sweets to make and stuffs like that..I can tell you this barfi is the answer..It is such a easy peasy recipe which you can whip up in any hectic days...I found this recipe in a magazine and tried it atonce...The result was pretty fabulous..So I hope you all will give this a try and let me know what you think..Off you go to the step by step recipe with pictures..

Ingredients:

Store Bought Instant Milk powder- 1 cup (I used Everyday)

Sugar- 1 1/2 cup (Reduce as per ur taste)
Ghee - 1/2 cup
Water - 1/2 cup

Method:

Take ghee in a kadai and heat it up..Now add in milk powder and fry for 3 minutes..

Remove this and set aside.

Take sugar in the same kadai and cover it with a water..Bring that to boil..

Let it boil continuously for 5-8 mins untill it reaches one string consistency...(ie) if you take the spoon off from the sugar syrup the last drops falls from the spoon forms a string...

Now gradually add in fried milk powder and mix well..

Stir this continuosly for 5 mins or untill it is thickened..

Grease a pan with butter and pour this in it..

Let it cool down completely before cutting into pieces..

Serve..

wow simple. How much water to pour over sugar? enough to cover the sugar?

Hi Aarthi,

I was so excited to see this recipe as it seemed fairly simple but it turned out to be a disaster when I tried it :-(

Your pic shows that after frying the milk powder it is quite dry and lumpy but when I used the exact same quantities, I ended up with a very very liquid brown paste that even after adding sugar it looked like dry brown crumbs and could not be shaped. I was so disappointed as I had to throw the whole thing away :-(

Could you advise what went wrong? I used nestle nido milk powder.

Aarthi said...

@Priyanka I think there must be something wrong with the measurements. You must have added little more ghee i think. Try it again by reducing the ghee level.

Priyanka said...

Thanks Aarthi, i'll defintely be giving it another shot.

Hi you have said in the above comments that for every one cup sugar add half a cup of water but in your recipe list it says one and a half cup sugar with half a cup of water. So which one is right?

Aarthi said...

@AnonymousAdd half cup of water, that will be good.

Aarthi, tried this recipe today and must say it is yummy. Thank you!

Dear Aarthi..tried this recipe the moment i saw it..but did not turn out the way I expected...it was lil crunchy and sticey from the corners..I mean after letting it cool..the corners were sticky and also it was too sweet...can u suggest wat could have gone wrong?

Aarthi said...

@AnonymousIt it is sticky, then you have not reached the correct stage. you need to cook it a little longer so it will reach barfi stage. And for 1 cup of milk powder. i.5 cup of sugar will be good, but if you like it less sweet reduce the amount of sugar.

@AnonymousYou could use any milk powders and not coffee creamers. Nestle Nido works good too.

Hi,

I tried this today, and although it was yummy it wasnt really burfi consistency, more like sticky toffee. Where did I go wrong?

Aarthi said...

@AnonymousAdd it to the pan and cook it little longer, it will turn into barfi consistency

Nazia Batrick said...

First time i made this it turned out perfect but then my 2nd 3rd n 4th attempt failed. It kept turning out sticky n soft. Not setting properly. Not sure where im going wrong.

Nazia Batrick said...

Hi mine turned out all soft n sticky. Didnt set hard like it should. Wat am i doing wrong?

Aarthi said...

@Nazia BatrickIf it is sticky, then u have not reached the correct sugar syrup stage. Add it to pan and cook it little longer.

Hi Arti , thank you for all the lovely recipes you share. I tried this recipe and it was so yummy that I couldn't resist from saying thank you. I made a few adjustments though ! Reduced the sugar to half , that is three quarters of a cup, ghee to one third of a cup and water also to one third of a cup,,,,,also , I boiled the sugar and water for just 3 minutes and reached the required consistency. This recipe is surely going to be used very very often. Thanks for the pics also ,,, such a big help they are. I admire your patience. Stay blessed !
