Mum's Papali Kootu Kari / Papaya & Channa Dal Cooked in a Coconut Jeera Masala

Amma makes kootu kari often with lots of vegetables. She makes it with cucumber, pumpkin and so many veggies. She usually makes this to serve with any spicy gravies like pulikulambu or something like that. This is so healthy recipe, you can make it with zero oil too, just skip the seasoning part.

Amma used slightly ripe papaya for this, she loves the sweetness it gives the curry. But dont use too ripe ones. You can use raw ones too in this recipe. I hope you will love this recipe and let me know how it turns out for you.

Preparation Time : 15 mins
Cooking Time : 40 to 45 mins
Serves : 4 to 5

Ingredients:

Raw Papaya - 1 medium size peeled and cubed (Amma used slightly ripe ones)

Split Yellow Channa Dal / Kadala Paruppu - 3/4 cup
Turmeric powder / Manjal podi - 1 tsp
Salt to taste

To grind:
Coconut - 3/4 cup
Jeera powder - 1 tsp
Dry Red Chilli - 3 or to taste

For Seasoning:
Oil - 1 tblspn
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
Urad dal / Ulundam Paruppu - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - 1 spring

Method:

Take channa dal and soak it in water for 15 mins. Now add them in a kadai and cover it with water. Bring it to boil and simmer for 15 to 20 mins till the dal is cooked.

Once the dal is half cooked, add in papaya and mix well. Cover with a lid and let it cook for 15 min or till the papaya is cooked.

Add in turmeric and salt and mix well.

Now take the grinding ingredients in a mixer and make into a paste by adding some water.

Now add the paste into the papaya mixture and mix well. Cook it for 5 to 8 mins.

Make seasoning by heating oil and add in mustard, urad dal and curry leaves, Let it sizzle for a min.

Pour this over the papaya mixture and mix well.

Serve with rice.
