Barley makes a best first food for babies. Since it is less allergenic and it is quite filling too. I made a easy porridge using that and added some apples into it to make it little sweeter. I used whole barley, so i used a pressure cooker to cook it. I have included a method for cooking barley on a sauce pan too..So make sure you read the complete recipe.

Few things you have to remember before making this.

1)The consistency of the porridge which you make totally depends on you. You can make it too runnier and pour it bottles and feed your baby or make it little thicker and feed your baby using a spoon.

2)If you feed a good bowl of this for your baby. Your baby will sleep peacefully for a good 2 hours. It is that filling.

3)This wont cause constipation in babies. I am feeding this every alternate days to maha and she is passing stool daily.

4)You can start feeding this to 6 to 10 month baby.

    Ingredients for Barley Apple Porridge

    • Whole Barley - ¼ cup
    • Apples - 1 cup peeled and cubed
    • Water - 3.5 cup

How to sterilize baby feeding bowls:

Start by sterilizing the bowls and spoons which you are going to feed your baby. Take the bowl and spoon in a large saucepan, cover it with water and bring them to a boil. Boil it rapidly for 5 mins. Now you can turn the heat off and leave them stay in the hot water till use.

How to Make Barley Apple Porridge for Babies

    1. First start by cooking barley. Take barley in a bowl and wash it well.
    2. Add it to pressure cooker, pour over 3 cups of water, cover and pressure cook for 5 whistle.
    3. Simmer for 15 to 20 mins. Switch off the heat and let the pressure go all by itself.
    4. Open the pressure cooker, taste to see whether the apples are cooked.
    5. Now add in the chopped apples and ½ cup of water.
    6. Place it on stove and cook on a low heat for 2 mins.
    7. Now puree this using a hand blender or using a blender till it is smooth.
    8. Pour into clean bowl and feed your baby.
    9. How to cook barley on stove top:
    10. Take whole barley in a blender and powder it.
    11. Heat 3 cups of water in a sauce pan, Bring it to a good boil.
    12. Add in barley powder and keep whisking.
    13. Now cover it and simmer the pan for 25 to 30 mins till it is completely cooked and the porridge gets thick.
    14. Now add in pureed apples and cook for a further 2 mins.
    15. You can serve this porridge to babies as it is, or if you want it super smooth, you can puree this once more and feed your baby.

Thanks for sharing lots of baby food recipes..You are doing a great help for lots of moms who prefer to give home made food to their babies.

One small correction..( you can delete this part from comment )

Open the pressure cooker, taste to see whether the apples are cooked.

In the sentence above, shouldn't it be barley instead of apples? It is obvious of course. But for someone totally new to kitchen, it might be confusing.

Hi Aarthi.. Love ur recipes.. I am a new mom and hence find your site very helpful. In the baby's food recipes it would be really great if you could include from which month can we start feeding that particular recipe. Since in the comments so many moms inquire, it will be nice to have an idea if it can be fed 5 months and above child. Thanks in advance

if he is Caucasian he will be born with blue eyes but they might not stay that color! Caucasian babies do not usually keep their "original" eye color (blue).
