How to Preheat Oven for Baking

Preheat an oven to --- Degree C..This is sentence which you will be seeing in most of my baked recipes. I have been getting so many mails from my viewers, what is preheating, how should we preheat and why should we preheat.

Preheating is not a rocket science. It is just heating a oven empty before you put the cake tin or any tray in.

    What is Preheating?

Preheating is just heating a oven without anything just a prior 10 mins or so before you put the cake tin or any dishes in. This ensures the oven reaches the proper and correct temperature.

    Why should we Preheat?

If you put a cake tin or tray in a cold oven then heat it gradually, then the cooking time will get vary from the recipe and it wont bake evenly and ends up getting dry and unbaked. Preheated oven cooks the food properly and bake it to perfection. So preheating is a must before you put the cake tin or any food in.

    How should we Preheat?

Dont complain about my oven, it looks dirty but it is a very old oven of mine, but works like a pro.

For baking in a microwave convection oven :
First set your oven to convection mode, if you have micro + convection mode then set it to that mode. Then set the temp, on the oven for 5 to 10 mins. Then put your cake tin in and bake

Hi Aarthi, After surfing the internet for years at last i found the right place where you demonstrate us with pics. Really very informative. I have samsung oven. It has microwave, grill, microwave + convection, microwave + grill options.
Should i still go for OTG? or this oven could serve the same purpose?
For baking cakes which option should i use?
And should i remove the glass plate (which comes with rotating) inside the oven while preheating and baking? will it break i do so?

Well done in both explaining what is pre-heat and also dealing with useless comments. Keep going. Will look forward to read more of your posts.

You dont have to feel sad about harsh comments. Those comments are not in your control. Shifting your focus off the things you can’t control can create increased happiness, less stress, better relationships, new opportunities, and more success. Hi Aarthi,
I am in USA and I am a frequent viewer of ur blog (almost everyday)
Always if I have any doubts regarding cooking, i will jump into your blog and ur blog is very useful for me who is away from home town and missing mom's guidance always...
All these days when I bake things in convection I used to preheat the oven to mentioned temp (with no time limit)and once I am done with my baking preparation I put the baking tray in and then only I will fix the baking timer as in the receipe.
      Is it a right process?
Do I need to off the temperature once I put the baking tray in?
My convenction oven is a big one like dishwasher size which has heating coil under double row rack.
Can we use Glass tray (oven use) in convection?

      Dear Aarthi,

I had bought a MR 40 l and as an inaugural baking I made some Shrewsbury cookies. I had kept my oven mode at the single element and kept the cookies in the cookie tray. And as you may suspect they all got burnt. Then i searched for the ways to bake in a MR and reached your site. And i was surprised that a lady has taken the time to explain the entire thing about ovens and has painstakingly explained and replied to every comment and query and my doubts got cleared. Made another batch with the Fan and two elements mode and they made a wonderful batch of cookies. Thank you Aarthi for explaining all my quesries and explaining so many ladies out there that patience is a virtue!! Im at awe of you Aarthi!!!!
