Ingredients

  • ½ cup washed Toor Dal / Tuvaram Paruppu
  • ½ tsp Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi
  • 1.5 cup Water
  • For Seasoning:
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds / Kaduku
  • 1 tsp Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam
  • Curry leaves a sprig
  • ½ tsp Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi
  • For Sambar:
  • 1 large sliced or 10 peeled Onions or Shallots
  • 2 slit Green Chillies
  • 1 large Tomatoes chopped
  • 1 peeled and cubed Potato
  • 1 Carrot chopped
  • 6 Beans chopped
  • 1 small Cucumber chopped
  • 5 Ladies Finger / Okra chopped
  • 2 tbsp or to taste Tamarind Pulp
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Sugar or Jaggery
  • 2 tbsp Coriander Powder / Malli Podi
  • 2 tsp Chilli Powder
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi
  • ½ cup grated Coconut and ground with water
  • Coriander leaves a handful chopped
  • Water as needed

Instructions

  • Cook dal with turmeric and water till done. Mash well and set aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add all seasoning ingredients and let them sizzle.
  • Add in onions, chillies and tomatoes mix well.
  • Now add in all the veggies and toss well. Sprinkle little salt and sugar. Mix well.
  • Add in the spice powders and mix well.
  • Pour in water, tamarind water and mix well. Cook till the veggies are done.
  • Add in dal and coconut mix. Mix well and simmer for few more mins.
  • Add in coriander leaves and mix well
  • serve.
