Ingredients

  • 1 cup Channa Dal
  • 1 large Radish chopped
  • 6 Shallots / Sambar Onion
  • 2 slit Green Chilli
  • 3 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • ¼ tsp Asafoetida
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 2 tbsp Coriander powder
  • 2 tsp Chilli Powder
  • 2 tbsp Tamarind Pulp
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Jaggery
  • Coriander Leaves / Cilantro a handful

Instructions

  • Cook channa dal till they are mushy. Set it aside.
  • Heat oil in a pot. Add mustard and cumin seeds in it.
  • Throw a pinch asafoetida in that and mix well.
  • Add in shallots, green chilli and radish in that oil and cook for 5 mins till the raw smell goes away.
  • Add in turmeric,coriander and chilli powder and mix well.
  • Add a splash of water and cook everything till the oil separates from this mixture.
  • This will clearly say that the masala is cooked.
  • Now add more water and tamarind. Add in cooked channa dal.
  • Season with salt and jaggery.
  • Bring everything to a boil. Cover and simmer the pot for 15-20 mins so that every flavour gets combined.
  • Add in lots of coriander leaves and switch off the flame.
  • Serve this sambar with rice.
