Channa Dal

Shallots / Sambar Onion

Green Chilli

Cumin Seeds

Asafoetida

Turmeric Powder

Coriander Leaves / Cilantro a handful
Instructions
▢
Cook channa dal till they are mushy. Set it aside.
▢
Heat oil in a pot. Add mustard and cumin seeds in it.
▢
Throw a pinch asafoetida in that and mix well.
▢
Add in shallots, green chilli and radish in that oil and cook for 5 mins till the raw smell goes away.
▢
Add in turmeric,coriander and chilli powder and mix well.
▢
Add a splash of water and cook everything till the oil separates from this mixture.
▢
This will clearly say that the masala is cooked.
▢
Now add more water and tamarind. Add in cooked channa dal.
▢
Season with salt and jaggery.
▢
Bring everything to a boil. Cover and simmer the pot for 15-20 mins so that every flavour gets combined.
▢
Add in lots of coriander leaves and switch off the flame.
▢
Serve this sambar with rice.
