Ingredients

  • 1 cup Black Eyed Peas / Karamani / Lobia dried
  • 1 cup dried Oil
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam
  • 1 tsp Fennel Seeds / Saunf / Sombux
  • 2 cm piece Cinnamon / Pattai
  • 1 large chopped finely Onions
  • 2 pricked with a knife Green Chillies
  • 1 tbsp Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1 tbsp Chilli Powder
  • 1 tbsp Coriander Powder / Malli Podi
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi
  • 1 tsp Cumin Powder / Jeera Podi
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1 tsp Tomato Puree I used storebought
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 3 tbsp finely chopped Coriander leaves

Instructions

  • Take black eyed peas in a bowl. Wash it well. Now cover it with water and soak it overnight. Next day drain the water, add it to pressure cooker, cover with fresh water and pressure cook for 3 whistle, simmer the flame and cook for 10 mins. Turn off the heat and let the steam go all by itself. Open the cooker and drain the liquid from the peas. Set aside.
  • Now heat oil in a kadai. Add in cumin, fennel, cinnamon and saute for a min.
  • Add in onions and green chillies along with salt and sugar. Saute till golden.
  • Add in ginger garlic paste and saute for a min.
  • Add in all spice powders and mix well.
  • Add in tomato puree and cook till oil separates from it.
  • Add in the cooked peas and mix well. Mix for 3 to 4 mins.
  • Add in the milk and mix well. Simmer for 5 mins or so.
  • Turn off the heat and add in coriander leaves and serve.
