Tomato Pappu Recipe | Tomato Dal Recipe | How to Make Andhra Tomato Daal

Tomato pappu or Andhra Tomato Dal is made with tomatoes, toor dal and spices which adds a tangy taste to the dal. This dal is perfect to mix with hot rice and ghee.

Ingredients

  • Toor Dal / Tuvaram Paruppu / Split Pigeon Peas – 1 cup
  • Tomatoes – 2 large chopped
  • Green Chilli – 1 slit
  • Salt to taste
  • Water – 4 cups
  • For Seasoning:
  • Oil / Ghee – 1 tblspn
  • Mustard Seeds / Kaduku – 1 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam – 1 tsp
  • Fenugreek Seeds / Methi / Vendayam – ½ tsp
  • Dry Red Chilli – 1
  • Curry leaves – 1 spring
  • Turmeric Powder – ½ tsp
  • Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
  • Coriander Powder / Malli Podi– 1 tblspn
  • Tomato – 1 small chopped

Instructions

  • Wash dal in several changes of water and let it soak for 15 mins.
  • Now take in a pot and add water, tomatoes and green chilli and bring it to a boil. Cover and simmer for 20-25 mins until the dal is cooked completely..It should be completely mushy.
  • Now add salt and mix well..Keep this in simmering..Adjust the water level if you need..
  • Heat a tawa or kadai. Add oil in it. Add mustard seeds , cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, dry red chilli, curry leaves, turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and tomatoes. Mix this for a min.
  • Pour this seasoning over the dal and mix well.
  • Let it simmer for 5 more minutes.
  • Serve with a bed of rice or roti.
