Zebra Cake Recipe – Valentine Day Special Recipes

Zebra cake is a lovely one, because it has lovely black and white lines running along…The cake may look so complicated, but it is not a big deal to make…If I can make it everyone can make it.

I made this cake last weekend for my sister’s friends, they all loved it.I beg you all to try this once. One suggestion that I can give is,after you made the batter if the batter is so thick you could add some more milk to it..The consistency of the batter should be like a dosa batter…

So hope you all give this a try and let me know what you think…

Preparation Time : 15 mins
Baking Time : 45 to 50 mins
Serves : 7 to 8
Recipe Source:Pan Gravy Kadai Curry
Baking Pan Size – 9″ Round Cake Pan / 23 Cm Round Cake Pan

Ingredients:

All Purpose Flour / Maida – 2 cups / 240 gram
Granulated Sugar – 1 cup / 200 gram
Whole Full Fat Milk -1 cup / 240 ml
Vegetable Oil – 1 cup / 240 ml
Vanilla Essence – 2 tsp
Salt – 1/4 tsp
Baking Powder –  1 tblspn
Eggs – 4
Cocoa Powder – 3 tblspn (use good quality)
Method:
Preheat the oven to 180° C. Prepare a baking pan.
Mix together a tsp of cocoa and a tsp of flour together.Prepare a tin by applying Butter on all sides and dusting with flour and cocoa mixture.
In a separate bowl mix together flour and baking powder together.Set this aside.
In a mixing bowl beat together eggs, sugar and vanilla essence till pale and light.Don’t make it fluffy.
Add in milk, salt, oil and mix well.Fold in flour mixture slowly.
Take half of the batter in to another bowl and mix in cocoa.
Now take the tin and pour 2 tblspn of white batter, next in with cocoa batter and repeat this step till the batter is finished.
Bake it in the oven for 45-50 min or until the cake is cooked. To check whether the cake is cooked,Insert a skewer in,if the skewer comes out clean then the cake is done.
Let the cake cool completely before removing it from the tin and slice it into wedge and serve.

I have a question regarding baking the cake….Every time I try using the tin (the one you showed), I end up having under-cooked part at the center and if I wait too long over baked (dry – burnt sometime) outer sides. To solve the problem I use the bundt-pan like.. http://img1.classistatic.com/cps/po/100426/812r4/0781bm7_27.jpeg .. its OK at home to eat but to take it somewhere I need to find a way to cook it properly in proper pan. Please give me some tip….anyone?? Thanks for the wonderful recipe, will surely try.

@Aj.There might be two reason for that..
You oven heating must not be even or else something must have gone wrong with the batter.

Try to reduce the temparature of the oven and cook it till the cake is done, so that you wont get chances of burning.

PS:This is my personal opinion, i am sure about this.

    Hi,
You said to bake cake at 180 degrees. I want to know whether it is of Normal Oven, OTG or Microwave or all of these. I've got M/w. with convection. But unable to bake it well as it gets 85 percent cooked and the inner layer is normally uncooked.
Hope to receive ur valuable advise.
    Thanks

Aarthi, what a great looking cake! Thanks for trying this from my space. I hope your sister and her friends liked it!

Past couple of days have been extremely unhappy ones due to domestic issues. Then I win a book and you try something from my space. **hugs**. Its very rewarding!

A tip from me to you — I am not baking expert but this is what I do to my cakes — After the cake cools down to room temperature, stick the cake in the fridge for an hour or so by wrapping it in a cling film/saran wrap. Then when you cut the cake with a sharp serrated knife the cut will be perfect. That is how I cut my cake and the texture looks great in a photo. You can cool it down to room temperature again to dig in. 🙂

Hi I am a regular at your blog. I love your recipes. Especially the way you give details and post step by step pictures of the recipes. Hats off to you for taking so much effort. Today I tried this zebra cake. And it turned out to be great. The only thing is, it was not as sweet as it should be. Especially because I have sweet tooth. Can I make the cake with double the amount of sugar? Like, can I put 2 cups of sugar in order to make it more sweeter? Will that ruin the texture of the cake? Please help!
    Thankyou 🙂

Aarthi, very nice cake, I have a doubt. Wenever I make a cake, I follow ur recipe to the full extent. I don't change anything. But I have always noticed that after baking , I never see that crumbly texture in my cakes. My cake looks kind of moist inside and sticky. The top and bottom of the cakes look perfectly cooked and even dry out if I bake for extra minutes. But the inside has little rise and non-crumbly texture. Taste of the cakes is perfect. Where am I wrong? In mixing the matter? or the soda or in baking? I use an electric oven which bakes other things perfectly.
