Potato Kurma Recipe | Aloo Kurma Recipe | Urulaikilangu kurma

Potato kurma is a gravy made using potatoes, onions, tomatoes. Sometimes peas are added in this. Potato Kurma Recipe with step by step pictures. Aloo kurma or Urulaikilangu kurma is made using potatoes, onions and coconut masala cooked together to create a curry. This goes well with chapati, appam, idiyappam even idli or dosa.

Ingredients
  

HOTEL STYLE POTATO KURMA

  • Onion - 1 chopped
  • Tomato - 2 chopped
  • Potato - 3 peeled and chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil - 1 tsp
  • Water as needed
  • Coriander leaves a small handful chopped

For Grinding

  • Coconut - 1 cup grated
  • Fennel Seeds / Sombu / Saunf - 1 tsp
  • Cinnamon / Pattai - 1 small piece
  • Roasted Gram Dal / Pottu Kadalai - 1 tsp
  • Poppy seeds / Khus Khus / Kasa Kasa - 1 tsp
  • Ginger - 2 tsp chopped
  • Garlic - 4 to 5 cloves
  • Dry Red Chilli - 4 to 5
  • Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp

POTATO PEAS KURMA RECIPE

  • Oil - 2 tblspn
  • Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1 tsp
  • Fennel Seeds / Sombu / Saunf - 1 tsp
  • Cinnamon / Pattai - 2 cm stick
  • Onion - 1 large chopped finely
  • Green Chilli - 2 slit
  • Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tblspn
  • Tomato Puree - 2 large pureed
  • Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
  • Coriander Powder / Malli Podi - 1 tblspn
  • Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - 1 tsp
  • Cumin Powder / Jeera Podi - 1 tsp
  • Garam Masala Powder - 2 tsp
  • Green peas - 1 cup i used frozen
  • Potato - 2 large peeled and cubed
  • Coriander leaves a handful finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

For Grinding

  • Coconut - 1 cup grated
  • Poppy Seeds / Khus Khus / Kasa Kasa - 1 tblspn

URULAIKILANGU KURMA RECIPE

  • Onion-1 sliced
  • Potato- 3 large cubed
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil-1 tbspn

For Roasting & Grinding

  • Coconut-1 cup grated
  • Dry Red Chilli-3
  • Coriander seeds / Malli-2 tblspn
  • Cinnamon / Pattai -1 inch stick
  • Fennel Seeds / Sombu / Peru Jeerakam- 2 tblspn
  • Oil-1 tblspn

Instructions
 

HOTEL STYLE POTATO KURMA RECIPE

  • Take all ingredients for grinding in a blender and puree till smooth.
  • Now heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add onion and tomato and saute for 2 mins. Add potatoes, salt and water and pressure cook for 3 whistle. Now turn off the heat and let the steam go by itself.
  • Now add the ground masala and mix well. Bring it to a boil and simmer for 5 mins.
  • Add coriander leaves and mix well.
  • Serve.

POTATO PEAS KURMA RECIPE

  • Take coconut and khus khus in a blender and make it into a fine puree. Set aside.
  • Heat oil in a kadai. Add in cumin, fennel, cinnamon and let it sizzle.
  • Add in onions and cook till golden. Add in chillies and mix well. Add in salt and mix well
  • Add in ginger garlic paste and cook for a min or so.
  • Add in tomato puree and cook till oil separates from the mix.
  • Add in all the spice powders and mix well.
  • Now add in the ground masala and cook till oil separates.
  • Add in potatoes and mix well. Add in water and mix well.
  • Transfer this to a pressure cooker and cook this for 2 whistle. Now simmer the flame and cook for 5 more mins. Now turn off the heat and let the steam go all by itself.
  • Open the cooker and add in peas and simmer for 2 more mins.
  • Add in coriander leaves and mix well.
  • Serve with roti

URULAIKILANGU KURMA RECIPE

  • Heat oil in a kadai, Add all the roasting ingredients and roast till it turns dark in colour.Now allow this to cool down, Take it in a blender and make it into a fine paste. Set this aside.
  • Now heat 1 tblspn of oil in a kadai. Add in onions and fry for a min. Add in potatoes and fry for 3 mins. Season with salt and mix well.
  • Pour enough water so that the potatoes are completely immersed. Bring this to boil and simmer covered for 20 mins until the potatoes are cooked.
  • Add the ground masala in this and mix well. Simmer this for 5-10 mins, Check for seasoning and switch off the flame. Serve hot with roti, dosa, rice or anything. But this taste great with Appam.
