½ cup Toor Dal 1 Tomato chopped 4 cloves Garlic peeled 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi 1.5 cup Water Salt-to taste Coriander leaves- a handful finely chopped For Grinding: ½ cup Coconut 2 Green chilli 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds / Jeerakam For Seasoning: 1 tablespoon Ghee or Oil 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds ¼ teaspoon Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya podi 1 sprig Curry Leaves
Take the grinding ingredients in a mixer and grind it into a smooth paste.
Wash toor dal well. Take dal, water, tomato, garlic, turmeric powder in a pressure cooker.
Cover and pressure cook for 3 whistle. Turn off the flame and let the steam go all by itself.
Now open the cooker and mash the dal roughly.
Add in the ground paste and mix well.Let it come to a boil again.Season with salt.
Now in a small pan,Heat ghee and add in the mustard seeds, asafoetida and curry leaves.Now pour this tadka into the dal and mix well.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with rice.
