- 2 cup dried Cow Peas / Thatta Payir
- 10 peeled Shallots / Sambar Onion
- 6 cloves Garlic peeled
- 1 large Tomatoes chopped
- 1 tablespoon or to taste Tamarind Pulp
- 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi
- Salt to taste
- For Masala:
- ¾ cup grated Fresh Coconut
- 5 to 8 Dry Red Chillies
- 2 tablespoon Coriander Seeds / Malli
- 4 peeled Shallots / Sambar Onion
- For Seasoning:
- 4 tablespoon Gingelly Oil / Indian Sesame Oil
- 1 teaspoon Mustard Seeds / Kaduku
- 2 Dry Red Chilli
- ¼ teaspoon Fenugreek Seeds / Vendayam / Methi
- a sprig Curry Leaves
Soak Cow peas overnight. Take them in a pressure cooker, cover with water. Pressure cook for 3 whistle, simmer the flame and cook for 5 mins.
Turn off the heat and let the steam go all by itself. Open the cooker and set aside.
Take grinding ingredients in a blender and make it into a fine puree.
Heat oil in a kadai. Add in the seasoning ingredients and saute for a min.
Add in shallots and garlic. Saute for couple of mins. Add in salt and turmeric powder. Mix well.
Add in tomatoes and saute for 2 more mins.
Now add in cooked cow peas along with water, ground masala, tamarind pulp, extra water if needed.
Mix everything well and bring it to a boil.
Cover and simmer till oil separates.
Serve with rice.
