Heat oil in a kadai. Fry dry red chilli till golden. Remove to a plate. In the same oil, fry garlic cloves tll golden and remove it to the same plate.
Now in the same oil add the tomatoes, tamarind and cook till it turn completely mushy. Add in salt and sugar and mix well.
Now take garlic, chilli, tomatoes in a blender and make into a smooth paste. Add water if needed.
Transfer this to a bowl.
Now make tempering. Heat oil in a kadai. Add in mustard and urad dal. Add asafoetida and let it sizzle for a 30 seconds. Now add in curry leaves and fry it for 30 sec.
