Ingredients

  • ¼ cup Toor Dal / Tuvaram Paruppu
  • ¼ cup Masoor Dal
  • ¼ cup Yellow Moong Dal / Pasi Paruppu
  • 6 to 7 peeled Shallots / Sambar Onion
  • 1 large Drumstick cut into pieces
  • 2 tbsp Tamarind Pulp
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 3 to 4 tbsp Homemade Sambar Powder
  • For Seasoning:
  • 1 tbsp Ghee / Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds / Kaduku
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam
  • ¼ tsp Asafoetida / Kaya Podi / Hing

Instructions

  • Wash all the dals really well. Add it to a pot along with shallots. Cover with water.
  • Bring it to boil, cover and simmer for 15 mins till the daln is ¾th cooked.
  • Now add in drumstick, salt, sugar, tamarind pulp, sambar powder and mix well.
  • Bring this to boil and simmer again for 20 to 25 mins till everything is cooked.
  • Now make seasoning by heating ghee and crackling mustard and cumin. Add in asafoetida and mix well.
  • Pour this over the sambar and mix well.
  • Serve.
