Simple Cabbage Dal Recipe (Cabbage Lentil Curry)

Cabbage dal also known as Cabbage Lentil Curry is a simple and delicious dish that is healthy, filling and easy to prepare. It is made with cabbage, moong dal, chillies, tamarind and a flavourful ghee tempering. Serve it hot with steamed rice, with a spoonful of ghee, poriyal and papad for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

To Cook Together

  • 1 cup Split Yellow Moong dal
  • 2 cups Cabbage shredded
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 4 no Green Chillies slit
  • Water as needed

To Mix with Cooked Dal

  • 1 tablespoon Tamarind Pulp
  • 2 teaspoon Red Chilli flakes
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar or Jaggery
  • Salt to taste

For Tempering

  • 3 tablespoon Ghee
  • ½ teaspoon Asafoetida
  • 2 teaspoon Cumin Seeds

For Garnishing

  • ¼ cup Coriander leaves chopped finely

Instructions
 

  • Take moong dal in a bowl and wash it well in multiple changes of water. Add it into a cooking pot.
  • Now add in shredded or chopped cabbage, green chillies, turmeric and water and bring it to a full boil. Simmer the flame and cook for 20 mins till the dal is cooked completely.
  • Now add in salt, sugar, red chilli flakes and tamarind. Mix well and Simmer for 5 more minute till the raw smell from tamarind leaves. Take it off the heat.
  • Make tempering by heating ghee, add in cumin seeds and asafoetida and let them splatter. Pour this over the cooked dal and mix well.
  • Add in freshly chopped coriander leaves and mix well. Cabbage dal is ready to serve with rice or roti.
