Mumbai Masala Sandwich Recipe | Masala Toast Recipe

Mumbai Masala Sandwich, is a popular street food in and around Mumbai | Bombay. This delicious sandwich is made with bread that is stuffed with an Indian spiced potato filling layered with green chutney, crunchy vegetables then toasted until crisp. In this blog post I have shared authentic method of making a street style masala toast along with homemade sandwich masala with step by step pictures and video.

Ingredients
  

For Potato Masala

  • 1 teaspoon Vegetable Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  • 1 inch Ginger
  • 6 no Garlic
  • 2 no Green Chillies
  • ½ cup Green Peas Frozen
  • 1 teaspoon Salt or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 large Potato boiled, peeled and mashed
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon Juice
  • 2 tablespoon Coriander Leaves chopped finely

For Mumbai Sandwich

  • 8 slices Bread of choice
  • 4 tablespoon Green Chutney
  • 4 teaspoon Sandwich Masala
  • 1 cup Lettuce shredded
  • 1 no Onion sliced thinly
  • ½ no Capsicum sliced thinly
  • ½ no Cucumber sliced thinly
  • 4 tablespoon Butter

Instructions
 

  • Wash and cut potatoes in half. Take them in a pressure cooker, cover with water and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistle. Once the pressure is released, open the cooker and strain the potatoes in a colander. Allow the potatoes so it cool for 10 minutes. Now peel off the skin. Roughly mash the potatoes using fork or potato masher. Set aside. Grind ginger, garlic and green chillies to a smooth paste. Set aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add in mustard and curry leaves and let them sizzle. Add in ginger garlic and chilli paste and saute for 1 minute. Add in salt and turmeric powder and saute for 30 seconds. Now add in peas and mix well. Add in mashed potatoes and mix well. You can add lemon juice or coriander leaves to taste. Potato Masala done.
  • Take two bread slices, spread some green chutney over it. spread lettuce and cucumber slice, sprinkle with sandwich masala. Add some potato masala and spread evenly, top with capsicum and onion slices. Sprinkle with some more masala. Cover with other bread and toast in a tawa or a toaster with 1 tablespoon butter. Serve.

Notes

  • You can use any bread of choice. You can use white bread, brown bread or multi grain bread.
  • For topping, you can use lettuce, tomatoes, cheese slices, sev as needed.
  • You can toast the sandwich in toaster, grill pan or tawa.
  • Sprinkle more green chutney, sev on top when serving.
