Bean Sprouts | How to Sprout Mung Beans

Mung Bean Sprouts also known as sprouts, bean sprouts, green gram sprouts. In this blog post I have shared how to grow mung bean sprouts at home easily without any special equipment or sprout maker. I have shared two methods bean sprouts, Indian sprouts and Asian bean sprouts which is used in ramen, japchae and stir fry noodles. How to Grow Mung Sprouts (Indian Variety)

  • Take moong bean in a bowl and wash it with plenty of water. Now cover them with fresh water and let them soak for 6 to 8 hours. Now strain them completely in a colander and wash them well.
  • Now add them to a hot case or any container and cover them. leave them for 8 to 10 hours or overnight. Now you can see small sprouts peeking from them.
  • Transfer them to an air tight container and store them in fridge for 3 to 4 days.

How to Grow Bean Sprouts (Asian Variety)

  • Wash and soak moong bean in water overnight. Strain them in a colander and wash them well.
  • Line a sieve or sifter with clean cloth and Sprinkle mung bean on it in a single layer.
  • Now take a large container, place a small bowl in the bottom and place this sieve into the container. Cover with another cloth and put a lid partially covered. Let it sprout overnight. Make sure this sprout container is not under direct sunlight and keep it in a cold place.
  • Next day wash the sprouts really well in cold water and place it again in the same container. If there is any water left in the container. Drain the water and wash the container. Allow them to sprout again. Keep doing this for 5 to 6 days until the moong beans are nicely grown.
  • Once the sprouts is grown and ready to harvest. Remove it from the cloth and cut off the roots and leaves. Store in a container wrapped in paper towel in fried. Use as required.

Tips for Mung Bean Sprouts (Indian Variety)

  • If you don't have a hot case. You can put them in a clean cloth and tie them. Now keep them in side a clean bowl and leave them overnight.
  • Drain the soaked bean completely before putting them in the hot case.
  • if you want longer sprouts leave them out for a more time.
  • Always store them in an air tight container in fridge.
  • You can follow this method to make sprouts with any bean like channa, mochai, peanuts, urad dal. But the soaking time with vary.

Tips for Mung Bean Sprouts (Asian Variety)

  • Make sure this sprout container is not under direct sunlight and keep it in a cold place.
  • Rinsing moong bean daily is very important. If you can rinse in the morning and evening. Rinsing helps remove the stinky smell. 
  • You can harvest the moong sprouts from 5th day onwards.
  • Remove the roots, but you can keep the leaves.
