    Ingredients

    • Unsalted butter : Butter gives the cookies its classic rich flavour that just melt in mouth, which makes them soft and indulgent.
    • Sugar : Sugar is added for its sweetness and makes the cookies slightly crispy on the outside while baking. Use powdered sugar as it melts easily with butter.
    • All purpose flour / Maida : All purpose flour makes the base of the cookie and holds the ingredients together. You can also replace it with whole wheat flour or use a mix of both for a healthy alternative.
    • Baking powder : Baking powder is a leavening agent used to slightly raise the cookies while keeping them soft and light.
    • Salt : A pinch of salt is added to balance the sweetness and enhances the flavour of the cookie.

    Step by Step Pictures

1)Preheat oven to 180 degree C. Take butter in a mixing bowl. Make sure the butter is at room temperature.

2)Add in some sugar. you can use some sugar which is powdered, so the mix gets nice and creamy easily.

3)Cream this well using a spoon or an electric mixer until it looks well mixed.

4)Add in plain flour and baking powder into the butter sugar mixture.

5)Add in a pinch of salt.

Alternatively you can mix the plain flour with baking powder and salt separately in a bowl and add it into this.

6)Mix using the spatula bring the dough together to a soft dough.

7)Now lets shape the cookies. You can use a small ice cream scoop to divide equal portions. Take a small portion of dough from the cookie dough.

8)Roll it into a smooth ball like this.

9)Line a baking pan with parchment paper. Place the cookies on the tray. Leave space between the cookies as it will spread. I got around 15 to 16 cookies.

10)Use a fork to make indent in the cookie. This is what creates the iconic fork look.

11)Press it firmly so the shape stays intact as it bakes.

12)Repeat this step with the other cookie dough as well. Now pop it into the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 16 minutes.

13)Depending on the size of the cookies the baking time may vary a little. Once baked the cookies will look slightly spread and slight golden on top.

14)Remove biscuits from oven, allow to cool on a rack. Once cool, store in an air tight container and enjoy with milk, tea or coffee.

    Expert Tips

    • Use room temperature butter as it blends easily with sugar and creates light and soft cookies.
    • Beat the sugar and butter until cream and fluffy. This helps the cookies to rise slightly and remain soft inside.
    • Don't over-mix once the flour is added. This can make the cookies harder.
    • Add any flavouring agents like vanilla extract, almond extract or spices like cardamom powder, nutmeg powder to enhance the taste of the cookie.
    • Sprinkle chocolate chips, chopped nuts on top, press gently with fork and bake for extra crunch and flavour.

    Storage & Serving

Once baked, allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack. This helps to set and retain their crispiness. Then store the cooled cookies in an airtight container. It stays good at room temperature for 1 to 2 weeks.

Serve the fork cookies along with a hot cup of coffee or tea for an evening snack. For kids, dip the cookies in melted chocolate, garnish with sprinkles and serve as a fun treat.

    FAQ

Can I make these cookies ahead ?

Yes, you can prepare the dough in advance and chill it in the refrigerator. Shape and bake the cookies when you're ready to bake. They hold their shape well when frozen.

Can I use brown sugar instead of regular sugar ?

Definitely ! Brown sugar has a nice caramel taste and yields slightly darker color cookies. But the texture may slightly change from the traditional butter cookies.

Can I add nuts to the dough ?

Absolutely ! You can add chopped nuts like cashewnut, almond, pistachio or chocolate chips to the dough, mix and bake. This gives a beautiful flavour and texture to the cookie.
