    About Marshmallow Fondant

Marshmallow fondant is a smooth icing made from melted marshmallow, icing sugar, water and oil. It is used to cover or decorate the cakes and it tastes better than the regular fondant. It is a budget friendly alternative to regular fondant.

When it comes to decorating cakes and cupcakes, especially for theme based, most of the bakeries use fondant. It is used to create the design and a polished look will be made. But most people avoid store bought fondant because of its texture and overly sweet. On the other hand, this marshmallow fondant has a soft texture with mild vanilla flavour that makes it even more enjoyable to design and eat.

Marshmallow fondant looks and tastes better than the store bought ones. It is the perfect idea for decorating cake and cupcakes on your own without any hassle.

Difference Between Marshmallow Fondant and Regular Fondant?

Regular fondant is made with liquid glucose, gelatin, icing sugar, glycerine and water. It takes more time to start from scratch and also the ingredients are quite hard to find, plus they will be quite expensive.

Whereas with marshmallow fondant is a simple version that gives you the same texture as regular fondant. As the marshmallow is already made with the main ingredients of fondant like liquid glucose, gelatin and icing sugar. So, the process of making marshmallow fondant becomes super easy and budget friendly.

Once the marshmallows are melted, transfer them to a bowl. Start adding icing sugar a little at a time, don't add all at once. Be patient and take your time with this step. Knead the dough for at least 15 to 20 minutes until it becomes soft, smooth and non sticky.  I have used pink marshmallows. So it is already coloured. If you're using white marshmallow, you can add any food color of your choice while melting the marshmallow.

    Ingredients

Confectioners sugar / Icing sugar : Icing sugar is nothing but powdered sugar, used to thicken the melted marshmallow and roll it into a dough. It helps to make a non sticky, soft and smooth dough.

Marshmallows : Marshmallows are the base of this quick fondant recipe. As they already contain sugar, gelatin, it is easy to melt them and creates a stretchy base that will be easy to work with.

Water : A small amount of water is used to melt the marshmallows

Oil : Oil is used to grease the hand while kneading the dough. It prevents the fondant from sticking to the hand and surface.

6)Take it in a bowl and allow it to cool completely.

    7)Add in confectioners sugar.

    8)Mix well.

9)Add more sugar and mix well.

10)You have to add more icing sugar and keep mixing.

11)Keep mixing until the mixture forms a soft dough.

12)Knead well to a soft dough.

    13)Now fondant is mixed well.

14)Apply generous amount of oil on your hands and knead the fondant.

    14)Now marshmallow fondant is ready.

15)Cover with plastic wrap and store.

16)You can use this immediately or use later.

    17)Use this to decorate cakes.

    Expert Tips

    • If the fondant is not tightly covered, then it will easily dry out.
    • Use mini marshmallows for easy melting.
    • If using a big marshmallow, then chop and melt them.
    • To add flavour to the fondant, mix any flavouring agents like vanilla extract, almond extract, butterscotch extract to the melted marshmallow.

    Storage

To store the marshmallow fondant, first apply some oil over it, then tightly cover with a cling wrap or store it in an airtight container. It stays good in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 weeks.

The homemade marshmallow fondant can be used in various ways :

    • Use it to cover your birthday cakes neat and smooth.
    • Create themed decorations for baby showers, birthdays and parties.
    • It can also be used to cover and decorate cake pops.
    • Use cookie cutters to shape and design the fondant.

    FAQ

Yes you. Both mini and regular marshmallows melts easily and works for making fondant. Just measure and add according to their size.
