Thenkuzhal Muruku - Diwali Recipes

Muruku takes a important snacks in your diwali menu. There are so many muruku varieties which you could make..I have a recipe for mullu muruku recipe here in my blog. I am planning to post couple more muruku recipe too. It is pretty simple to make but extremely tasty.

If you are planning to give gifts for your friends on diwali. Then give this muruku. They will be happy to receive homemade gifts. It is so versatile and stays good for weeks in a air tight container. So try it and let me know how it turns out.

Preparation Time : 20 mins
Cooking Time : 3 to 4 mins per batch
Makes : 10 muruku

Rice Flour - 1 cup
Urad Dal Flour - 3 tblspn ( Click here for recipe )
Butter - 2 tblspn
Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi - 1/2 tsp
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam  - 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Water as needed

Take rice flour, urad dal flour in a bowl and mix well.

Add in butter and use your hands to crumble it.

Add in salt, jeera, asafoetida and mix well. Add water slowly and knead into a soft dough.

I line a plate with foil, so it makes easier to remove it out.

Now take a portion of dough and put it into thenkuzhal press and make muruku out of it.

Heat oil for frying and take the muruku from the foil and fry the muruku in hot oil. Once the shh stops from the oil, remove the muruku and drain in paper towel.

1) While you press the muruku, if you find it cracking, then add more water to the dough.
2) Fry muruku in hot oil, if you add it to cold oil, then muruku wont cook properly and it will drink more oil.
3) You can add sesame seeds too.
4) Cover the dough with wet cloth as it dries soon.

  2. Hi
While tryin those mine gt spreaded in oil any reason y ths disastrous happnd

  3. @soundariyaThere is two reason.

1)Your dough has too much fat. Add more rice flour and knead the dough again.

    2) The oil which you are frying is not hot enough

  4. Thnks aarthi ll try adding rice flour nd chk it again

  5. Hi Aarthi,

I made these murukku today and I am successful. I also made poli as per the instructions. With the proportions, I could make 15. Thank you very much for showing this step by step which otherwise I would not have dared doing.

  6. Is it a raw rice or boiled one
