Pongal Kootu Recipe with step by step pictures. This is made with Sweet Potato ,Yam Ordinary,White Pumpkin and Pumpkin. Also known as 7 Kari Kootu Recipe or Ezhukari Kuzhambu.
Pongal kootu
Pongal kootu is not the traditional one which we make at home. In my place on pongal we make normal raw rice pongal, sweet sarkarai pongal, sambar, papadum and coconut thogayal. But i have been seeing this curry in many blog, so i decided to give it a try. And i made it today for pongal and enjoyed it with raw rice pongal.
I used a mix of veggies which i had on hand, you can use whatever veggies you like. You can add mochai as well in this. I used the veggies which i love and it includes many hard veggies like potatoes, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and yam, and some soft veggies like white pumpkin and snake gourd. I loved this combo..

Ingredients for 7 Kari Kootu Recipe
- Sweet Potato / Cheeni Kizhangu- 1 peeled and cubed
- Yam Ordinary / Karunai Kizhangu - 1 peeled and cubed
- Raw Banana / Vazhakkai - 1 peeled and cubed
- Snake Gourd / Pudalangai - 1 cup chopped
- White Pumpkin / Ash Gourd- 1 cup peeled and cubed
- Pumpkin / Poosanikai - 2 cups peeled and cubed
- Potato - 1 peeled and cubed
- Salt to taste
- Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - 1 tsp
- Water- 1 cup
- Yellow Moong Dal / Pasi Paruppu - ½ cup
For Masala:
- Fresh Coconut - 1 cup grated
- Dry Red Chillies - 4 to 6
- Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1 tsp
- Rice Flour / Arisi Mavu - 1 tblspn
- Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - ½ tsp
- Water as needed
For Seasoning:
- Coconut Oil - 1 tblspn
- Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
- Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1 tsp
- Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 1 tsp
- Curry leaves a handful
How to make Pongal Kootu
- Take moong dal in a pan, cover with water and cook till done.
- Take grinding ingredients in a blender, add water little by little and make it into a smooth paste.
- Prepare veggies and wash them well. Now take them in a pot and add in salt, turmeric powder and water. Mix well. Bring it to a boil and cover and simmer the flame and cook for 15 to 20 mins till veggies are done.
- Once the veggies are done, add dal and coconut masala nd mix well. Simmer for a further 5 mins.
- Now make seasoning by heating oil and crackling the spices, pour this in to the curry and mix well.
- Serve with rice.

Ingredients
