    Kumbakonam Kadappa Recipe with step by step pictures. This is one of the popular dishes in Tanjore district in which onions and potatoes are cooked in coconut gravy. This goes very well with hot Idli and Dosa.

    Kumbakonam Kadappa

    Finally i baked the lemon drizzle cake(which i was talking about yesterday) and it was amazing..I took pictures too, will share it soon in my blog. And yesterday i was cooking like a pro, i made kadappa, lemon drizzle cake, vadai egg varuval, fish fry, i was cooking and clicking the whole day..

    Ingredients for Kumbakonam Kadappa

    • Onion - 1 large sliced thinly
    • Green Chillies - 2 slit
    • Curry Leaves - a sprig
    • Yellow Moong Dal / Pasi paruppu - ½ cup
    • Potatoes - 2 large
    • Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tbsp
    • Cinnamon / Pattai - 1 small stick
    • Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1 tsp
    • Cloves - 4
    • Oil - 1 tbsp
    • Salt to taste
    • Coriander leaves for garnishing

    For Grinding:

    • Coconut - ½ cup grated
    • Green Chilli - 3
    • Cashewsnuts - 6
    • Fennel Seeds / Saunf / Sombu - 2 tsp
     
    Kadappa is a speciality recipe from kumbakonam, it taste so mild and great with soft idlies. I wanted to make this gravy for a long time, finally i made it today and it tasted so good. Everyone loved it lot.

    How to Make Kumbakonam Kadappa

    1. Cook dal and potatoes separately till it completely cooked. Mash dal well, Mash potatoes roughly. Set aside till use.
    2. Take all grinding ingredients in a blender and make into a fine puree. Set aside till use.
    3. Now heat oil in a pot. Add in cinnamon, cloves and cumin seeds. Crackle for 30 sec.
    4. Add in onions, green chilli and curry leaves. Saute for couple of mins. Add in ginger garlic paste and mix well.
    5. Add in water, salt and bring it to boil.
    6. Once it reaches boil, add in cooked dal and potatoes and mix well. Simmer for 5 mins.
    7. Add in ground masala and mix well. Bring it to boil. Simmer for 5 mins.
    8. Add in coriander leaves and serve.

    Ingredients

    • 1 large Onion sliced thinly
    • 2 slit Green Chillies
    • Curry Leaves - a sprig
    • ½ cup Yellow Moong Dal / Pasi paruppu
    • 2 large Potatoes
    • 1 tbsp Ginger Garlic Paste
    • 1 small stick Cinnamon / Pattai
    • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam
    • 4 Cloves
    • 1 tbsp Oil
    • Salt to taste
    • Coriander leaves for garnishing
    • For Grinding:

    • 6 Cashewsnuts
    • 2 tsp Fennel Seeds / Saunf / Sombu

    Instructions

    Kumbakonam Kadappa Recipe Step by Step

    Take all your ingredients

     

     

    First grind the masala..Take coconut in a blender

     

     

    Add fennel, chilli and cashew

     

     

    grind to a smooth paste

     

     

     

    I already cooked moongdal and potatoes

     

    Mash potatoes roughly

     

     

    Now lets cook, heat oil in a pan

     

     

    Add in cinnamon, cumin and cloves

     

     

    Add in onions, chillies and curry leaves

     

     

    Saute for a min

     

     

    Add in ginger garlic paste and saute for a min

     

     

    Pour in some water

     

     

    Mix well

     

     

    Add in salt and bring it to a boil

     

     

    Add in cooked mashed dal

     

     

    Add in mashed potatoes

     

     

    Simmer for a while

     

     

    Add in coconut masala

     

     

    Mix well and simmer

     

     

    Simmer it 

     

     

    Meanwhile i started steaming idlies

     

     

    Now the kadappa is done

     

     

    Add in coriander leaves

     

     

    Serve
