Easy Chow Chow Kuzhambu Recipe – Chayote Kuzhambu Recipe

 I kind of stay away from this veg chow chow. I dont buy them regularly. But amma buys them often and make kootu, poriyal with them. I have tasted them and it taste good only. Somehow i have not posted a single recipe using this veg. So when i went shopping few weeks back, i saw this veg and picked one.

It was so fresh which insisted me to cook with that the next day itself. If not i never end up using them. So immediately i made the gravy and it turned out so yummy. 

So give this a try and let me know how it turns out for you..

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 25 to 30 mins
Serves : 4

Ingredients:

Chow Chow / Chayote – 1 big ones
Salt to taste
Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi – 1 tsp
Water – 2 cups

For Masala:
Oil – 1 tsp
Coriander Seeds / Malli – 2 tblspn
Dry Red Chillies – 3 to 4
Cumin Seeds / Jeera – 1 tsp
Onions – 1 medium size chopped
Tomatoes – 1 large chopped roughly
Garlic – 3 cloves

For Seasoning:
Oil – 1 tblspn
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku – 1 tsp
Urad dal / ulundu paruppu – 1 tsp

Method:

Take chow chow in a kadai, add in salt and turmeric powder. Add in water and cook till it is done.

Now make masala. heat oil in a pan, add in the ingredients and saute for 3 to 5 mins. Now take this in a blender and puree till smooth.

Add this to the cooked chayote and mix well. Cook this for few more mins till oil separates,

Make seasoning, heat oil and crackle in some mustard and urad dal. Pour this into the curry and mix well. Serve

Pictorial:
Take chow chow or chayote
cut them like this and remove the seeds
cube them
take them in a pot
cover with water
add litte salt
add in turmeric powder
cover and cook till done
while the chayote is cooking..lets make the masala
heat little oil in a pan
add in coriander seeds, dry red chillies and cumin seeds
saute them for few sec
add in onions, tomatoes and garlic
keep sauteing them
cook till they are done
take it in a blender
make it into a puree
now it is cooked
add in the cooked masala
mix well
cook till oil separates
make seasoning by heating oil and crackling mustard and urad dal
add it to the curry and mix well
serve
