    About Homemade Oat Milk

Nowadays, people are looking for vegan and dairy free options for its health benefits, so these milks like soy milk, oat milk, almond milk and cashew milk have become quite popular. Unlike other nut milk, oat milk is nut free, soy free and so easy to make at home.

Oat milk is naturally rich in fiber, iron and calcium. It is also a good source of beta glucan, a type of fiber which is good for heart health and lower cholesterol.

Homemade oat milk is so smooth and creamy without adding any artificial flavours and preservatives. If you like, the oat milk can be sweetened with sugar, maple syrup, honey or brown sugar of your choice. It is perfect for making breakfast recipes like cereals, smoothies, overnight oats, milkshake coffee, latte and also for making muffin, cupcake and pudding.

Oat milk is made by soaking the oats in water for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Then in a blender, grind the soaked oats with water. Strain the mixture 1 to 2 times to get a smooth, creamy milk. That's how simple it is ! Whether you're new to dairy free lifestyle, or looking for homemade alternative to store bought milk, then this oat milk recipe is a must try.

Nut and Dairy free : Oat milk is perfect for those who are lactose intolerant and allergic to nuts. Plus, you have full control over certain things like the ingredients, consistency and sweetness of the milk. So you can use this milk to make your everyday coffee, tea, milkshake and smoothie.

Affordable : Instant oats is one of the easily available ingredients in the market. With that, you can make your own oat milk at home using water. It is super quick and affordable dairy free milk to try at home without using any fancy ingredients or tools.

    Ingredients

Oats : Oats is the main ingredient and it is rich in fibre. Oats is one of the easily available and budget friendly ingredients for making dairy free milk at home. I have used instant oats. This also works with rolled oats too.

Water : Water is used for soaking and blending the oats into creamy milk.

Sweetener : You can use any sweetener like sugar, honey, maple syrup or brown sugar to sweeten the milk. It adds taste and elevates the flavour of plain oat milk.

Flavouring : Use any flavouring agents like vanilla essence, cardamom powder or cinnamon powder. As this helps to add a sweet and warm aroma to the oat milk.

How to Make Better Oat Milk

Soaking : Soak the oats by adding some water and leave it aside for 30 minutes.

Cold water : Don't blend the oats with warm water, as it releases the starch content from oats which will eventually turn into slimy consistency. So, it is best to use cold water for grinding.

Don't overblend : Blend the soaked oats for a few seconds. Over blending can turn the oats too slimy.

    Step by Step Pictures

1)Take oats in a bowl. It is better if you use rolled oats.

2)Pour in water over the oats until it is submerged.

3)Mix well. Allow this to soak for 30 minutes.

    4)Now the oats is soaked.

5)take the oats in a blender.

    6)Puree for few seconds.

7)Now strain this using a sieve.

8)Use a spoon to press and extract as much milk as possible.

9)Now I am adding all the oat pulp back into the blender.

10)pour some water and blend them.

    11)Now the oat is blended.

12)Pour it again through the sieve and strain as much as possible.

    13)This is oat milk.

14)I like to strain this again to remove any leftover oat pulp.

    15)This is raw oat milk.

16)Now you can add sweetener that you like.

17)Add vanilla extract or ground cardamom for flavouring.

18)Mix well. Pop this in fridge and let it chill.

    19)Serve cold.

    Expert Tips

    • Don't discard the strained oat pulp. Use it for baking like muffin, cupcakes.
    • Use muslin cheese cloth or fine mesh strainer to strain the milk.
    • The stored oat milk naturally separates, so shake them well before using.
    • Add natural flavours like vanilla essence, cardamom powder, saffron, maple syrup, cocoa powder to enhance the taste of oat milk.
    • While grinding, add some soaked cashews to make a thick, creamy milk.

    Storage & Serving

Store the raw oat milk in a glass jar and it stays fresh for 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator. Always shake them well before using.

Homemade oat milk is a super versatile recipe that you can use to make coffee, milkshake, latte, cereals, overnight oats, muffins, cookies and sauces.

Or simply enjoy this raw oat milk with sugar and vanilla essence.

Very inspirational and healthy cooking at it's best Aarthi!!!

I am going to try this right away.

BTW this reminds me of the coconut milk that i make at home. I have a Preethi coconut/fruit/tamarind extractor jar which am planning to use for this. Lazy me already plotting to eliminate one more step (sieving) from this super simple brilliant recipe.

      Thank you for the same.
