When my daughter's were baby I used to introduce them variety of baby foods like purees, soups, khichdi. They used to enjoy those dishes which made them grow into not-so picky eaters. It is essential to introduce variety of foods for babies instead of giving the same food again and again.

Rice & Dal Porridge Mix
Mixed dal and rice porridge mix for babies which is very healthy for them. This is great porridge for weight gain, you can feed babies this for lunch. For making sweet porridge, add some jaggery syrup to it. But mahi is not a fan of sweet stuffs, so i use salt and ghee.
Ingredients
For Rice & Dal Porridge Mix
- Rice - 1.5 cup
- Masoor Dal - ¼ cup
- Moong Dal - ¼ cup
- Green Gram - ¼ cup
- Roasted Gram Dal - ¼ cup
- Toor Dal - ¼ cup
For Making Porridge
- Health Mix powder - 3 tblsp
- Water - 1 cup
- Cumin Powder - ½ tsp
- Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi a pinch
- Garlic - 1 clove grated
- Ghee - 1 tsp
- Salt to taste
How to Make Rice & Dal Porridge
1)Take all the dal together except roasted gram dal and wash them. Strain them in a sieve and let them dry completely. Wash rice really well. Dry completely.
2)Take dals in a pan and dry roast on low heat till golden brown.
3)Once golden, remove to a bowl.
4)Take rice in another pan and roast on medium heat till roasted.
5)Rice roasted till golden brown.
6)Remove this to a bowl and cool completely. Add roasted gram dal and grind into a fine powder. Store in an air tight container.
7)For making porridge. Take powder in a sauce pan, add water, garlic, cumin powder, asafoetida and cook on low heat for 5 to 7 mins till done.
8)Remove to a bowl, add salt and ghee and mix well. Serve.
Wheat Porridge Mix
Wheat Porridge makes a great filling and protein rich food for your babies because it has wheat and moong dal in it. And the addition of almonds makes it super healthy. I used wheat powder in this recipe. But my mom buys whole wheat, wash and dry it in sun and grind it in mill. I used homemade wheat flour for this recipe. If you can find good wheat powder you can use that. Or get whole wheat and do what my mom did.
Ingredients
- Whole Wheat flour - 1 cup
- Yellow Split Moong Dal / Pasi Paruppu - ½ cup
- Almonds / Badam - ¼ cup
How to Make Wheat Porridge Mix
1)Wash moong dal really well. let it drain in a sieve for 10 to 15 mins till it is mostly dry.
2)Heat a heavy bottom kadai. Add moong dal in it and roast it on a medium heat. The moisture will evaporate and the the dal will get golden. It will take around 10 to 15 mins. Once it reaches that stage remove to a plate.
3)Now in the same kadai roast almonds till they turn golden. It will take around 5 minutes. Remove that to the same plate as well.
4)take almonds and moong dal in a blender.
5)powder till fine.
6)Now in the same kadai add in whole wheat flour and roast them on a very low heat till nice aroma comes from it. It will take around 5 mins.
7)Add the ground dal almond mix into the roasted wheat flour and mix well.
8)Spread them on a plate too cool down. You can sieve them also. Store this in an air tight container in fridge.
9)For making porridge. Take a saucepan, add in 1 cup of karupatti water (2 tbsp palm sugar boiled with 1 cup water and strained).
10)Add 2 tbsp of wheat porridge mix and whisk till lump free.
11)Cook on medium heat till it gets thick. Cool down to room temperature and serve.
Sooji Porridge Mix
Healthy and nutritious sooji porridge mix for babies. It is rich in carb, protein and fat which makes a great breakfast for babies.
Ingredients
For Sooji Porridge Mix
- Sooji / Semolina / Rava - 1 cup
- Roasted Gram Dal / Pori Kadalai - ½ cup
- Cashews - ¼ cup
- Cardamom Powder - 1 tsp
For Making Porridge
- Sooji Porridge mix - 2 tblsp
- Water - ½ cup or as needed
- Palm candy as needed
How to Make Sooji Porridge Mix
1)take all your ingredients.
2)Roast roasted gram dal and cashews till golden and remove to the same plate and cool it down.
3)Roast sooji in a dry pan till golden brown. Remove it to a plate and allow it to cool.
4)Take this in a blender, add cardamom and powder finely. Store it in an air tight container.
5)While making porridge, add some powder in a sauce pan. add water and cook till thickened. Add sweetener of choice and mix well.
Health Mix for Babies
This is a super duper health mix for your baby. You could buy decent health powder mix from shops. But I love to make it myself for my baby, because you get to know what goes into them and you can customise it as per your baby needs.
Ingredients for Health Mix
- Rice - 1.5 cup ( I used cooking rice, ponni brand)
- Barley - 1 cup
- Roasted Gram Dal / Pori Kadalai / Pottu Kadalai - 1 cup
- Whole Black Urad Dal - 1 cup
- Green Gram Dal - 1 cup
- Yellow Moong Dal / Pasi Paruppu - ½ cup
- Masoor Dal - ½ cup
- Broken Wheat / Cracked Wheat / Dalia - 1 cup
- Cashew - ½ cup
- Badam / Almond - ½ cup
- Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1 tsp
- Ajwain Seeds / Omam - ½ tsp
- Cardamom / Yelakai - 10 pods (If using this, leave ajwain and cumin)
How to Make Health Mix for Babies
1)Take all your ingredients.
2)Take urad dal and green gram in a bowl and wash them well, drain and add to a dry pan and roast till it turns golden brown and dry. Remove to a plate.
3)Take masoor dal and yellow moong dal in a bowl and wash them well, drain and add to a dry pan and roast till it turns golden brown and dry. Remove to the same plate.
4)Lightly roast gram dal (pottu kadalai). remove it to a plate.
5)Take rice and barley in a bowl and wash them well, drain and add to a dry pan and roast till it turns golden brown and dry. Remove to the same plate.
6)Now roast daliya (broken wheat) till golden and remove to the same plate.
7)Roast cashews and almonds till golden and remove to the same plate.
8)Roast cumin and ajwain till golden and remove to the same plate.
9)If you are making a sweet one, leave ajwain and cumin and add cardamom to it. I made two version, so i took half of the mix and added cardamom to one and roasted cumin and ajwain in another.
10)Now take this in a blender and powder them as fine as possible.
11)Sieve them using a fine strainer.
12)Store them in a container and use it to make porridge.
Healthy Nuts Powder for Babies
This recipe is prepared with a combination of nuts that provides all the required nutrients for better muscle development. I added only badam and cashews in this, along with that I added roasted gram dal and dry ginger which are so healthy for your babies. I started giving this powder only after 10 months. If you want to make this for older kids. just add some pista, raisins, walnuts, dates to make it more healthy.
This is great as a daily health booster for your babies. You can add a spoonful of this in your babies porridge when you cook it and feed her. This is like magic and maha loves it so much. I add this to my ragi porridge, banana porridge.

- Roasted Gram Dal / Pottu Kadalai / Pori kadalai - 1 cup
- Cashews - ½ cup
- Badam / Almonds - ½ cup
- Dry Ginger - 2 inch piece or 2 tsp of powdered one
How to Make Healthy Nuts Powder
1)Take all your ingredients.
2)Dry roast badam and cashews till golden. Take badam and cashew in a kadai and roast them till they turn golden.
3)now add in gram dal and roast for a couple of mins.
4)Take this in a blender.
5)add dry ginger. Powder them finely.
6)Store in an air tight container in fridge. You can add a spoonful of this nuts powder in any of your porridge. It adds wonderful aroma and extra nutrients.
Oats Porridge Mix
Oatmeal Cereal for Babies. A highly nutritious breakfast recipe for your little one. This oatmeal porridge is so healthy and you can start this from 7 month.
Ingredients
- Oats (Instant or Rolled) - 1 cup
- Water as needed
How to Make Oats Porridge Mix
1)Dry Roast Oats in a pan. Take roasted oats in a blender and powder it finely. Store it in an air tight container till needed.
2)For making porridge. Now take spoonful of oats powder in a sauce pan, add some water and cook till it is creamy.
Poha Oatmeal Porridge Mix
Healthy and nutritious poha oatmeal porridge mix for babies. It is rich in carb, protein and fat which makes a great breakfast for babies. You can start this powder for babies above 7 months. Sago & Urad Dal Porridge Mix
This recipe is a healthy protein cereal mix for baby. It has sago and urad dal which helps in weight gaining in babies. Urad dal is high in protein and sago has carbohydrate which is good for babies. You can feed this to babies above 7 months.

- Whole Urad dal - ½ cup
- Sago / Sabudana - ½ cup
For Making porridge
- Sago Urad dal Mix - 1 tblsp
- Water - ¼ cup

How to Make Sago Urad Dal Porridge
1)Dry roast sago in a pan till golden. Set aside in a plate to cool. Wash urad dal and dry it completely. Dry roast till golden.
2)Take it in a blender and powder till fine.Set aside in a container.
3)When making porridge, take a tblsp of mix, add some water and cook till thickens and cooked. Add salt and ghee and mix well.
Barley Apple Porridge
Barley makes a best first food for babies. Since it is less allergenic and it is quite filling too. I made an easy porridge using that and added some apples into it to make it little sweeter. I used whole barley, so i used a pressure cooker to cook it.
Ingredients
- Whole Barley - ¼ cup
- Apples - 1 cup peeled and cubed
- Water - 3.5 cup
How to Make Barley Apple Porridge
1)First start by cooking barley. Take barley in a bowl and wash it well. Add it to pressure cooker, pour over 3 cups of water, cover and pressure cook for 5 whistle. Simmer for 15 to 20 mins. Switch off the heat and let the pressure go all by itself.
2)Open the pressure cooker, taste to see whether the apples are cooked. Now add in the chopped apples and ½ cup of water. Place it on stove and cook on a low heat for 2 mins.
3)Now puree this using a hand blender or using a blender till it is smooth. Pour into clean bowl and feed your baby.
Oats Apple Porridge
Oats are a very healthy ingredient to add in your babies diet. It makes a great first food for your babies. I added some chopped apples and ground cinnamon in this porridge which helps with the digestion.
Ingredients
- Oats - 1.5 tbsp
- Apple - ½ a big apple
- Cinnamon Powder - ¼ tsp
- Water - ½ cup or adjust
How to Make Apple oats porridge
1)Start by peeling and chopping ½ apple into small pieces. Take a clean sauce pan, in which you cook your babies food. Add oats, chopped apple.
2)Add in cinnamon powder and clean water in it. Put the saucepan on stove and cook it for 3 to 4 mins on a low flame till the oats is completely cooked.
3)Now take it off the stove and let it cool a bit. Pour the whole mix in a blender and make into a smooth puree. Serve.
Instant Wheat Cereal (No Cooking needed)
Homemade instant wheat cereal for babies with step by step pictures. Cereal is an instant baby food and this is a homemade version of ceralac made using wheat flour and natural ingredients. You will need to mix hot milk or water to make porridge out of this. Best travel friendly food for babies.
Ingredients
- Wheat Flour - 1 cup
- Almond Powder - 3 tblspn ( i used homemade badam milk mix)
- Rock Sugar or Panakarkandu - ½ cup
- Ghee or Melted Butter - ¼ cup
- Milk or Water - 2 tblspn
How to Make Wheat Cereal (No Cook)
1)Preheat oven to 180 degree C. Take palm candy (panangkarkandu) in a blender and make it into a fine powder.
2)In a mixing bowl. Take wheat flour and powdered palm candy.
3)Add almond powder and ghee. Add milk or water and knead to a soft dough like texture.
4)Now roll this between two sheets of plastic wrap. Trim off the edges and cut into squares. Remove it carefully using a spatula and place on a foil lined baking sheet. Bake it for 15 to 18 mins till golden. It will be soft when you take from oven, it will harden as it cools down
5)Let it cool completely. Now take this in a blender and powder finely.
6)Now for making cereal, take some powder in a bowl and add hot milk or water and mix till it reaches right texture.

- Make sure you roast all the stuff really well before grinding it.
- Always make small batches, so the powder stays fresh always.
- You can store these mix in an air tight container in fridge too. I always store homemade powders in fridge.
- These porridge can be given for babies who are above 6 months.
- The consistency of the porridge which you make totally depends on you. You can make it thin and pour it bottles and feed your baby or make it little thicker and feed your baby using a spoon.
- I use natural sweeteners like palm candy (panakarkandu) or karupatti. Karupatti strengthens your baby bones. Panakarkandu helps preventing cold for
