Raw Mango Sambar Recipe – South Indian Mango Sambar Recipe

Sambar is one of the staple in our house and in each and every south indian house..I have quite a lot of sambar recipes in my blog..I have created a separate folder for those sambar recipes..This is another addition to my sambar list..

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 25 to 30 mins
Serves : 4


Ingredients:

Raw Mango – 1 large chopped with skin
Onion – 1 small chopped
Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Water as needed
Homemade Sambar powder – 2 tblspn or to taste
Jaggery or Sugar – 2 tblspn or to taste
Coriander Leaves a handful finely chopped


For Dal:
Toor Dal / Tuvaram Paruppu – 1/2 cup
Turmeric Powder – 1/2 tsp
Water – 1.5 cup

For Seasoning:
Oil –  1 tblspn
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku – 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam – 1 tsp
Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu – 1 tsp
Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi – 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves a small handful

Method:

Take dal, turmeric, salt in a pressure cooker. Cover with water and pressure cook for 3 whistle. Simmer the flame and cook for 5 mins. Turn off the heat and let the steam go all by itself. Open the cooker and mash it well and set aside.

Now in a pot, add in oil along with seasoning spices. Saute for a min.

Add in onions, mangoes and mix well.

Add in salt and turmeric. Toss well.

Add in water and cook till mangoes are done.

Add in cooked dal, sambar powder, jaggery and mix well. Simmer it for few mins.

Add in coriander leaves and mix well.

Serve.

Pictorial:
Take washed toor dal in a pressure cooker
cover with water
add little turmeric
cover and pressure cook till done
mash the dal and set aside
meanwhile chop mangoes into big chunks
Heat oil in a pot, crackle in mustard, urad dal, cumin seeds
add a dash of asafoetida
and some curry leaves
let them sizzle for few mins
now add in onions
and some raw mangoes
mix that well
add a dash of turmeric
and some salt
pour in water
mix well
cover with a lid and boil it till mangoes are cooked
now mangoes are cooked
add in sambar powder
mix well
pour in dal
and a good amount of jaggery
mix well
Add lots of coriander leaves
mix well

    ohhh its so simple..thanks for the recipe..
    don't we need to add any other veggies at all? First time trying so asking..
