    Millet pongal recipe with step by step pictures. Healthy and wholesome millet pongal made using foxtail millets, spices and cashews.

    Millet Pongal Recipe

    This is my latest favourite recipe. I love pongal a lot. I make it quite often too. Since hubby and me don't eat rice these days, i used thinai for making this and it was like super hit. I never missed rice in this. It tasted really yummy.

    I served this with my all time favourite  pumpkin sambar. It was so delicious. You can have it with coconut chutney or tomato chutney as well.

    Ingredients for Varugu Arisi Pongal

    • Kodo millet / Varagu 1 cup
    • Moong dal ½ cup
    • Water 4 cup
    • Milk 1 cup
    • Salt
    • Ghee 2 tbsp
    • Ginger 1 tsp
    • Cashews 10
    • Cumin seeds 1 tsp
    • Black Pepper 1 tsp
    • Green chilli 2
    • Curry leaves

    How to Make Varagu Arisi Pongal

    Step 1

    Take kodo millet, moong dal, water and salt in a pressure cooker. Pressure cook for 4 whistle. Open cooker once pressure is released. Add milk and adjust the consistency. Set aside.

    Step 2

    Make seasoning. Heat ghee, add all the seasoning ingredients from ginger to curry leaves and let them sizzle.

    Step 3

    Pour this seasoning over pongal and mix well. Serve with chutney or sambar.

    Thinai Kara Pongal Recipe

    This is made using thinai arisi or foxtail millet. The pongal has a seasoning of spices and curry leaves tempered in ghee.

    Ingredients for Millet Pongal 

    • Thinai / Foxtail Millet - ½ cup
    • Yellow Moong Dal / Pasi Paruppu - ¼ cup
    • Water - 3 cups
    • Salt to taste
    • Ghee - 1 tsp
    • Black Pepper - 1 tsp
    • Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - ½ tsp
    • Cashew - 5
    • Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 1 tsp
    • Green Chilli - 1 chopped
    • Curry leaves - 1 sprig

    How to Make Millet Pongal 

    1. Take ghee in a pan, add foxtail millet and moong dal and roast for 1 min. Take it in a bowl and add water to it.
    2. Now place this inside a pressure cooker which has some water in it and pressure cook for 10 to 12 whistle. Now turn off the heat and let the steam go by itself.
    3. Open the cooker and remove the bowl carefully from it. Open it and mash it roughly.
    4. Now heat ghee in a pan, add all seasoning ingredients and fry for a min.
    5. Add the cooked millets and salt. mix well.
    6. Serve with chutney or sambar.

    Ingredients
      

    • ½ cup Foxtail Millet (thinai arisi)
    • ¼ cup Yellow Moong Dal / Pasi Paruppu
    • 3 cup Water
    • Salt to taste
    • 1 tsp Ghee
    • For Seasoning:
    • 1 tbsp Ghee
    • 1 tsp Black Pepper
    • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam
    • 5 Cashew
    • 1 tsp Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu
    • 1 Green Chilli chopped
    • 1 sprig Curry leaves

    Instructions

    Preparation Time : 5 mins
    Cooking Time : 30 mins
    Serves : 3 to 4

    Ingredients for Kuthiraivali Pongal

    • Kuthiraivali / Barnyard Millet - 1 cup
    • Yellow Moong Dal / Pasi Paruppu - ½ cup
    • Salt to taste
    • Water - 4 cup
    • Ghee - 1 tsp
    • For Tempering
    • Ghee - 2 tblspn
    • Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 2 tsp
    • Whole Pepper - 2 tsp
    • Green Chillies - 2 chopped finely
    • Ginger - 1 tblspn
    • Curry leaves - a sprig

    How to Make Kuthiraivali Pongal

    1. Wash dal and millet really well. Drain it and set aside.
    2. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker. Add in dal, roast till golden. Add in millet along with water and salt. Pressure cook fo 3 whistle. Simmer for 5 mins. Turn off the heat and let them steam go all by itself. Open the cooker and mix well.
    3. Heat ghee in a pan. Add in all the ingredients for tempering. Mix well. 
    4. Add the cooked dal millet and mix well.
    5. Serve with sambar  or chutney..
