Ingredients
- All purpose flour / Maida : Maida is used to make momo dough soft and chewy. The elasticity in the flour makes the dough easy to roll, shape and yields a soft texture once steamed. You can swap with whole wheat flour for a healthy alternative.
- Baking powder : Baking powder acts as the leavening agent that used to make the momo wrap soft and airy. It helps the dough to stay soft while steaming.
- Oil : Oil used to saute the vegetables until tender and yet slightly crunchy. Use any neutral flavoured oils of your choice.
- Garlic : Garlic has a strong pungent aroma that makes the filling more aromatic.
- Spring onion : Spring onion has a mild onion taste and flavour that adds fresh taste to the filling.
- Green chillies : Green chilli adds spicy flavour to the filling. Adjust the quantity based on your spice tolerance or replace with green chilli sauce.
- Vegetables : I have used vegetables like carrot, beans, capsicum and cabbage for the filling. They provide color, crunch and add nutrition to the filling. This makes the momo more healthy and delicious.
- Soy sauce : Soy sauce is rich in umami flavour and is one of the essential seasonings in Chinese style dumplings.
- Seasoning : Additional seasonings like black pepper, salt and sugar are added to balance the taste and enhance the overall flavour.

11)Bring the sides together to the centre while pleating it.

12)Seal the edges together to form tight momos.

13)Momos is shaped.

14)Place the momos on an oil greased steamer basket. Place the basket over a pan of boiling water. Cover with lid and steam cook for 8 to 10 minutes.

16)Serve with chutney of choice. I enjoyed with momo chutney.

Expert Tips
- Roll the dough as thin as possible, so that the momo won't turn hard or thick.
- Cook the vegetables on high heat so that they stay crunchy without turning soggy.
- Don't add too much filling to the momo. You may find it hard to seal or it causes the momo wrap to break while steaming.
- Leave some space between each momo so they don't stick together and steam evenly.
- You can swap the vegetable filling with paneer, tofu, noodles or meat like chicken, prawn to make it more flavourful.
Storage & Serving
Store the leftover momos once they are cooled in an airtight container. It stays good in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days. Reheat them by steaming again for a few minutes before serving.
Serve the hot steamed vegetable momos with spicy chilli garlic chutney, schezwan sauce, soy dipping sauce or with tomato ketchup for best flavour and taste.
FAQ
Yes, you can replace all purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a healthy version. It will be slightly different in texture, as it is less stretchy and has a nutty aroma.
In a steamer pot, boil the water. Once it starts rolling, place the arranged momos and steam for about 8 to 12 minutes. Or until the dough looks shiny and slightly translucent.
Yes, you can swap vegetables with chicken. Simply cook the chicken until tender and juicy, season it with spices. Fill inside the dough wrapper and steam.
Well, grease the steamer plates with oil lightly before placing the momos. It prevents them from sticking during steaming.
