Rasam-My Version

Yummiest Rasam
Hai Everyone….Yesterday night I made Blackforest cake…It came pretty good,I will post the recipe tomorrow.Today I am posting one of the typical south indian dish..Its Rasam..On hearing the name you will think that it is such a easy dish to make.But many of us wont get it perfect and tasty.This recipe is so good,that you don’t need any sidedish with it,you can have it with plain rice on its own.This rasam don’t need the rasam powder that we usually use,we are going to make the perfect rasam from scratch.I added ajinomoto in this rasam..I know it is not good for health,but a little amount wont do anything and in this dish it gives extra taste too,So I recommend you to try this dish with ajinomoto…So hope you all give it a go and leave comments.


Tomatoes-2 chopped
Green chilli-2 slitted
Garlic-5 cloves or a tblpsn of garlic paste
Cumin seeds(jeerakam)-1tsp
Pepper-1 tsp
Red chilli powder-1 tsp
Turmeric powder(manja podi)-1tsp
Mustard seeds(kaduku)-1tsp
Asafoetida(kaya podi)-1 tsp
Dry red chilli-1
Tamarind(puli)-2 tblspn mixed with some water(I used readymade tamarind paste)
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves – a bunch
Coconut oil-1tblspn


In a mortar and pestle or a mixer add in the garlic,pepper,cumin seeds and crush it.

In a kadai heat coconut oil and add in the crushed spices and fry well.Add in the red chilli pdr and turmeric pdr and mix well.Now add in the chopped tomatoes and cook for 3 min.

Add in the green chilli and mix well.Pour in the tamarind water and some more water and mix well.Season with salt,sugar and ajinomoto.Cover this and let it come to a boil.

In a small pan add oil and crackle some mustard seeds,Asafoetida,Red chilli and pour this into the rasam.Add a bunch of coriander leaves and mix well.

Serve hot with Steamed Rice.


Ur ingrediants

Crush Garlic,Pepper,Cumin seeds...Dissolve some tamarind in water

saute crushed masala in oil..Add spices,tomatoes,chilli,tamarind,salt,sugar,ajinomoto and water..Bring this to boil and pour in the seasonings...Add coriander leaves

This is exactly how my mom makes rasam,and you are riight, you can just have it plain as a soup. I remember as a kid whenever I fell ill, amma used to make this.....awesome indeed. By the way, she did not use ajinomoto and it still tastes good....

Hey Aarthi, I made rasam many times which tasted ok but never like in hotels.. Today I tried this and it was superb, my husband loved it.. I used to simply add raw chopped tomatoes in tamarind water, today I cooked the tomatoes and then made, it came really well, we had it with another of your recipes the mushroom fry http://www.yummytummyaarthi.com/2011/06/indian-style-stir-fry-mushroom.html which I totally loved.. :)
