How to Cook Basmati Rice - Absorption Method

I never thought that i will share a post for cooking rice, even though i have a post for cooking rice for biryani. But i thought this is a basic recipe which many of us struggle..I have shared cooking rice by draining method, so i decided to share how to cook rice by absorption method. And also i got mails from viewers asking me how i cook my rice for fried rice. So i thought this post will be useful. Hope you will try this out, and i used this rice to make a delicious chicken stir fry rice, so check it as well..

Preparation Time : 5 mins
Soaking Time : 15 to 30 mins
Cooking Time : 15 to 20 mins
Serves: 2

Basmati Rice - 1 cup
Salt - 1/2 tsp to 3/4 tsp
Water - 1.5 cup

Take rice in a bowl and wash it really well with different changes of water. Now take it in a bowl and cover with water..Let it soak for a minimum of 15 mins, you can soak it upto 1 hour max.

Now drain the rice, take it in a sauce pan. Cover with 1.5 cup of water, add some salt and mix well.

Bring this to a boil, cover the pot and simmer to the lowest flame. Cook this for 12 to 15 mins by which time the rice must have absorbed all the water.

Now open it and fluff it with a fork. Cover the pot again and leave to sit for 15 mins.

Now you can fluff it and serve or use in your cooking.

1)For making dum biryani add 1 cup water to 1 cup rice. Since you will be cooking it again during the dum process.

2)For making fried rice add 1.5 cup of water to 1 cup rice.

3)For serving it with curries, you can follow this proportion itself, but if you want little more softer rice, you can add upto 1 3/4 cup of water to 1 cup of rice. You can even add 2 cup of water to 1 cup of rice as well.

Measure your rice

Use a good quality basmati rice

Wash them well in several changes of water

Soak them for 30 mins

Drain them

Add it to a sauce pan

cover with water

add salt to taste

Mix well

Heat it and bring to a boil

Once it boils

cover with a lid and simmer for 12 to 15 mins

Now the rice has absorbed all the water

Fluff it gently

cover again and let it stand for 15 mins this makes the rice fluffy

Serve with curries or you can use this in fried rice

  1. Aarthy,
