Crispy Chinese Vegetable Buns Recipe – Fried Vegetable Buns Recipe

I get inspired from everything, specially in cooking..Whenever we used to have any food in restaurants or anywhere, when i take the first bite, i used to think..Hmm how would they made it…This is what happened when i had a chinese roll from a nearby bakery. It is like a hot dog burger bun, split in the middle and stuffed with some veggie masala, but the outer crust was so crispy and the bun itself taste so soft and squidgy. It was so good.. BANG! thats what inspired me to create my own version.

When i was thinking about it, i know it has a breacrumbed coating on it, but it has this really dark exterior which was impossible to achieve when it is baked. Then only i realized that the bun was not baked it was fried. In that recipe, the bun was split open in the middle and was stuffed with the vegetable masala, but i decided to stuff it inside the dough itself and it worked. The taste was fantastic and you have to try it to believe it..
Hope you will give this a try and let me know how it turns out for you..
Preparation Time : 15 mins
Cooking Time : 20 to 25 mins
Rising Time : 1 hour
Makes : 12 to 15 buns

Ingredients:
Oil for deep frying
Milk – 1/2 cup
Breadcrumbs – 1 cup or as needed
Cheese – as needed (optional)

For Dough:
All Purpose Flour / Maida – 2.5 cup
Dry Yeast – 1.5 tsp
Sugar – 2 tblspn
Salt – 1.5 tsp
Oil – 3 tblspn
Warm Milk – 1 cup
Warm Water as needed

For Filling:
Oil – 1 tblspn
Ginger – 1 tblspn finely chopped
Garlic – 1 tblspn finely chopped
Onions – 1 medium size chopped finely
Carrot – 1 finely chopped
Beans – 5 chopped finely
Capsicum / Bell Peppers – 1/2 chopped finely
Peas – 1/2 cup ( i used frozen)
Tomato Ketchup – 1/4 cup
Soy Sauce – 2 tsp
Salt to taste
Sugar – 1/2 tsp
Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
Spring Onion or Coriander leaves – 3 tblspn finely chopped
Method:
Start by making the dough. Take yeast and sugar in a bowl, add little warm milk and mix well. Set aside for 5 mins for the yeast to activate.
Now take Flour, salt, 2 tblspn of oil in a large bowl and mix well. Add in the yeast mix in and the rest of the milk. Mix well using a fork. Add little warm water as needed. Knead this to a soft dough. The dough has to be nonsticky. Drizzle in 1 tblspn of oil and knead well.Cover and set aside to rise for 1 hour.
While the dough is rising, lets make the filling. Heat oil in a kadai. Add in all the chopped veggies and saute them for 2 mins. Add in chopped ginger and garlic and saute them well.
Add in peas and mix well. Cook this till the veggies are cooked.
Add in salt, sugar and chilli powder and mix well. Add in ketchup and soy sauce. Toss well. Finally add in spring onion or coriander leaves and mix well. Set aside.
When the dough is risen, punch the air out and knead it once more. Add more flour if it is too sticky.
Now take the dough out, divide it into equal portions.

Take one ball and flatten it, spoon some filling in and seal the edges together.

For a variation, you can add some grated cheese over the filling and seal it for a cheesy version.

Now dip this in milk and in breadcrumbs.

Heat oil for deep frying and drop the buns in oil, Fry till golden, it wont take very long, just a min or so
Drain and set aside.
Pictorial:
Take all your ingredients for the dough

Take yeast in a bowl

add little sugar to it

add little milk to it

mix well and set aside for 5 mins or so

take flour in a bowl

add little salt

add in oil

mix well and make a well in the center

now add in the yeast mix in

pour in some milk

mix well

add little water

knead to a soft dough

add little oil

knead it to a soft dough..The dough has to non sticky,
so add more flour when kneading

cover the bowl with some plastic wrap and let it rise

While the dough is rising, lets do the filling

Hear oil in a pan, add in all veggies including the onions

give a quick toss in the oil

add in some finely chopped ginger and garlic

saute till veggies are cooked

add in peas..i used frozen

saute them as well

cook till everything is well cooked

add in little salt, sugar and chilli powder

saute them up

add in little ketchup

and soy sauce

mix well

add in chopped spring onion or chopped parsley

toss well

you can see now the dough has well rised

remove the wrap

punch down the air

take a small portion of dough

flatten it lightly

spoon the veggie filling in

seal the edges

place it in a plate

i added some cheese into one

sealed it well

i made three..

take a bun

and dip them in milk

now drop them in breadcrumbs

roll them well

drop it in hot oil

fry them..it wont take very long, just a min or so

remove them when they turn golden

you can do like this shape too

coat them in breadcrumbs as usual..

fry them

Enjoy

These buns taste so soft and fluffy

The rich evenly browned buns look delicious …but will get a guilty feeling for the deep frying part :/ ..Can we bake these balls instead of deep frying? If yes then at what temp. and how long, please?
