Even though it is readily available in every supermarkets. Making it at home from scratch is pretty easy. Plus it is cheap. You can use this in all baking stuffs and all recipes which calls for sweetened condensed milk.

Who is the inventor of condensed milk?

Gail Borden Jr., a native New Yorker, moved to Texas in 1829 and worked as a land surveyor, newspaper publisher, and inventor. In 1853, he invented a method for producing sweetened condensed milk. Previously, in 1836, Borden assisted in the planning of Houston and Galveston. Gail Borden Jr first condensed milk in an attempt to create a milk product that was shelf stable.

Why was sweetened condensed milk made?

The main reason for adding sugar is to extend the shelf life of condensed milk, which can be stored at room temperature for years. Sugar inhibits the growth of microorganisms in milk and helps it thicken even more it is added after the milk has been boiled, reduced, and effectively pasteurised.

Ingredients for Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk Recipe

    Milk Powder :
Milk powder is an excellent substitute for fresh milk because it contains the same vitamins and minerals as fresh milk and can be easily mixed into drinks and shakes. However, it tastes very different from regular milk, and many people find it unpleasant to their taste buds.

    Butter :
Butter has its own distinct flavour. Because butter is soft, creamy, and rich with just a hint of sweetness, the term buttery is frequently used to describe other foods.

This is a speedy version of homemade condensed milk using milk powder. But there are another version which uses milk and baking soda. Will share that soon as well. But i like this, because it taste very similar to store bought ones, the consistency and taste was pretty close. So hope you will give this a try and let me know how it turns out for you.
