While we were young my mother does her dal curry atleast 5 times a week.  We love to have dal with rice, ghee and papad..We will have it with some spicy chilli pachadi(I will post soon), since that curry was so bland, but the taste was so good. Nowadays I too cook lots of dals to make my family healthy..But my dals will be little spicier and has tons of flavours in it..

This is one of the dal which is packed with all types of taste in it..It has spiciness to it along with sourness and lets not forget  sweetness too..I made this a month back and it disappeared in no time..We had it with roti, but I am sure it will taste great with roti..

I hope you will love it and tell me if you try it..

Ingrediants:
Toor Dal / Tuvaram Paruppu – 1 cup
Tamarind paste – 1 tblspn
Jaggery / Sarkarai – 2 tblspn
Salt to taste
For Tempering:
Ghee – 2 tblspn
Cinnamon / Pattai – 1 small stick
Cardamom / yelakai – 3 crushed
Cloves / Krambu – 3
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam – 1 tsp

Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi – 1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder / Manjal podi – 1 tsp
Coriander powder / Malli podi – 1 tblspn
Chilli powder – 1 tsp
Garam masala powder – 1 tsp
Method:
Wash dal in lots of water. Soak it for 30 mins. Now drain it and add it to a pot and cover it with water.
Cook the dal for 20-30 mins till it is completely cooked.
At this point you can adjust the water level.
Now add in tamarind, jaggery and salt. Mix well.
Now start by making the tadka. In another frying pan add ghee and heat it up.
Add all the ingrediants given in the tempering list in the given order and saute on low heat for a min.

Lovely dish! I made it last week and served it with carrot & bean thoran. My husband who isn't too fond of tamarind in his food said this was the best way to use tamarind he ever saw. I think this dal curry might become a regular item in our meals.
