    Chana Pulao Recipe with step by step pictures. This recipe quick and is with protein rich chickpeas and this is one delicious pot of rice.

    Chana Pulav

    This pulav i made for todays lunch, i couldn't wait to share it with you. It is inspired from a meal which i ate when i was travelling, i had this with dal and butter chicken and it is the dinner which i had in flight. And i loved the flavours and combination of that. So i thought of making that for lunch today, i also made moong dal tadka to go with it. It will be shared in my next post.

    Ingredients for Chana Pulav

    • Oil - 3 tbsp
    • Bay Leaf - 1
    • Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1 tsp
    • Star Anise / Anasipu - 1
    • Green Cardamom / Yelakai - 4
    • Black Cardamom - 1
    • Cinnamon / Pattai - 1 stick
    • Mace / Javitri - 1
    • Onion - 1 medium size sliced thinly
    • Tomato - 1 sliced
    • Green Chillies - 3 chopped
    • Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tsp
    • Salt to taste
    • Kala Chana / Chana - 1 cup cooked
    • Basmati Rice - 1 cup
    • Water - 1 cup and ½ cup of cooking liquid from kala chana
     

    This is pretty easy pulao, great to put in your kids lunch box. If you pre cook the chana the previous day itself, then you don't have to worry about anything. It can be made in minutes.

    How to Make Chana Pulao

    1. Soak chana overnight, drain water add it to a pressure cooker, cover with fresh water.
    2. Add little salt and pressure cook this for 15 to 20 whistle till chana gets soft.
    3. Drain it and reserve the chana cooking liquid as well.
    4. Soak Basmati rice for 30 mins.
    5. Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add in the whole spices and saute for a min.
    6. Add in onions and green chillies. Saute till golden.
    7. Now add in ginger garlic paste and salt. Mix well.
    8. Add in tomatoes and mix well with the onions.
    9. Then add in cooked chana and mix well. Add in the drained rice and toss well.
    10. Now add in ½ cup of chana cooking liquid and water. Cover and pressure cook for 1 whistle, simmer the pan for 5 to 8 mins.
    11. Turn off the heat and let the steam escape all by itself. Open the cooker and fluff the rice.
    12. Serve.

    Ingredients

    • 3 tbsp Oil

    • 1 cup Basmati Rice
    • 1 cup and ½ cup of cooking liquid from kala chana Water

    Chana Pulao Recipe Step by Step

    Take all your ingredients
    These are the whole spices you will be using
    First i soaked chana overnight, Then I cooked chana
     till it gets soft in a pressure cooker
    along with some salt for 15 to 20 whistle.
    I soaked 1 cup of basmati rice for 30 mins
    Heat oil in a pressure cooker
    Add in the seasoning ingredients
    now add in onions and green chillies
    Saute till onion turns golden
    add in ginger garlic paste
    and some salt
    cook till it is done
    add in a slice tomato
    mix well
    add in cooked chana
    Mix that well
    add in soaked drained basmati rice
    mix that around
    I measured ½ cup of the cooking liquid from chana 
    poured that in
    i added a additional 1 cup of water
    Mix well..Cover and pressure cook

     

    Now it is done
    fluff up the rice and serve

      Can we add vegetables like carrot and beans along with this pulao? Do you think it would be nice with it? Wanted to try this for my kid to make him eat channa as he usually likes pulao.
