Kalkandu pongal is a white pongal in which the pongal made with rice and moong dal is sweetened with palm candy | kalkandu.

I saw this pongal recipe in quite a few blogs, and i wanted to try it so badly. So i gave it a shot and it came out quite good. For me it tasted like sarkarai pongal in white form. But the taste was so good, everyone loved it. And when i was shooting this, my sister brought maha. As you can see she has started grabbing things:)

    Ingredients for Kalkandu Pongal

    • Raw Rice / Pacharisi
    • Milk
    • Kalkandu / Sugar Candy
    • Cardamom Powder / Yelakai Podi
    • Ghee
    • Cashew
    • Kishmish / Sultanas

    Kalkandu Pongal Preparation

    • Take kalkandu in a mixer and powder it finely.Set aside till use.
    • Take raw rice in a bowl and wash it well. Drain the water and take the rice in pressure cooker. Add milk to it, cook this for 5 whistle, simmer the flame and cook for 10 mins. Now turn off the heat and let the pressure go all by itself. Open the pressure cooker and mix the rice with a spoon.
    • Put this cooker back on heat and reduce the flame to a low.
    • Add Powdered kalkadu to the hot rice and mix well. Keep this on low flame and mix well. Cook till the mix is thick.
