    Bottle Gourd Dal

    This is one dish which my mom makes often. The one thing she do is changes the vegetable that goes into this. She adds cucumber, pumpkin, snakegourd and stuff like that. I will surely post those recipes soon. This is one simple recipe that includes dal, veggies and it has no coconut in it.. It taste yummy when had with plain hot rice and ghee.

    Ingredients for Bottle Gourd Dal

    • Bottle Gourd / Sorakkai - 3 cups peeled and chopped
    • Yellow Split Moong Dal / Pasi Paruppu - ¾ cup
    • Garlic - 2 cloves
    • Shallots / Sambar Onion - 3
    • Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp
    • Green Chillies - 2
    • Salt to taste
    • Water - 2 cup
    For Seasoning:
    • Oil - 1 tblspn
    • Ghee - 1 tblspn
    • Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1 tsp
    • Onion - 1 small chopped finely
    • Garlic - 2 cloves chopped finely

    How to make Bottle Gourd Dal

    1. Take bottlegourd, and all the ingredients mentioned in a pot, cover with water, Bring it to a boil, simmer the pot and cook on a low heat till dal is cooked. It will take around 15 mins.
    2. Now add in salt and mix well.
    3. Now make seasoning by heating oil, add in cumin and let it sizzle. Add in onions, garlic and chillies. Saute till golden,
    4. Pour this over the dal and mix well.
    5. Serve

    Ingredients

    • 3 cups Bottle Gourd peeled and chopped

    • Salt to taste

    Bottle Gourd Dal Step by Step Pictures

    Take your bottle gourd
    Peel off the skin
    Cut it in half lengthwise
    Scoop the seeds
    cut it into small pieces
    Take it in a pan
    add in green chillies. Just prick it with a knife
    add in garlic
    peeled shallots
    Add in washed dal
    Pour in water
    mix well
    Add in some turmeric powder
    Mix well
    Cook till dal is done
    You can see the dal has some texture in them, this is how i like it
    Add in salt
    mix well
    Now lets make the seasoning
    Add cumin seeds to oil or ghee
    add in onions, chillies and garlic
    saute them
    fry till golden brown
    pour it into the curry
    Mix well
    Serve
