    Varutharacha Chicken Curry Recipe with step by step picture. This Varutharacha Kozhi Kuzhambu Recipe is made with Chicken, Fresh Coconut and Shallots

    Varutharacha Chicken Curry

    Chicken curry is the one which i make quite often, you can check out all my different varieties of chicken curries..This is a version which i make quite often, this is one of my native special recipe. This chicken curry has freshly roasted spices and coconut in it. So fragrant and so tasty dish.

    Roasting the spices and coconut till they are dark brown and adding that to the curry gives the curry a rich brown colour to this curry. So give this a try and let me know how it turns out for you..

     

    Ingredients for Varutharacha Chicken Curry

    • Oil - 2 tbsp
    • Onions - 1 large sliced thinly
    • Ginger garlic paste - 2 tbsp
    • Tomatoes - 1 large chopped
    • Chilli Powder - 1 tbsp
    • Coriander Powder - 2 tbsp
    • Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - 1 tsp
    • Cumin Powder / Jeeraka Podi - 1 tsp
    • Garam Masala Powder - 2 tsp
    • Salt to taste
    • Chicken - 500 gram with bone
    • Water - 1 cup
    • Coriander Leaves - 3 tablespoon finely chopped
    For Roasting & Grinding:
    • Oil - 1 tsp
    • Fennel Seeds / Sombu / Saunf - 1 tbsp
    • Cinnamon Stick - 3 cm stick
    • Cardamom Pods / Yelakai - 5
    • Cloves / Krambu - 5
    • Shallots / Sambar Onion - 15
    • Ginger - 4 cm piece
    • Garlic - 6 to 8 fat cloves
    • Fresh Coconut - 1.5 cup grated

    How to make Varutharacha Chicken Curry (Varutharacha Kozhi Kuzhambu Recipe )

    1. Start by cooking the chicken, Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add in sliced onions and fry till golden. 
    2. Add in ginger garlic paste and saute for a min. Add in all the spice powders and salt, mix well.
    3. Now add in chopped tomatoes and cook for 5 mins. 
    4. Add in chicken piece and toss well. Add in water. Cover the cooker and pressure cook it for 2 whistle, simmer the flame and let it simmer for 10 mins. Turn off the heat and
    5. let the steam go all by itself. Chicken is cooked now.
    6. When the chicken is cooking make the masala. Heat oil in a heavy bottom kadai. Add in all the whole spices and fry it for a min.
    7. Add in shallots, ginger, garlic, cook this for 5 mins or so.
    8. Add in coconut and fry it for 8 to 10 mins till it turns golden. Now let this cool down.
    9. Take it in a blender and make it into a smooth puree by adding some water.
    10. Now add this to the cooked chicken, add more water if needed.
    11. Bring this to boil, simmer it for 10 mins.
    12. Add chopped coriander leaves and mix well.
    13. Serve.

    Ingredients
      

    • 2 tablespoon Oil
    • 1 large sliced thinly Onions
    • 2 tablespoon Ginger garlic paste
    • 1 large chopped Tomatoes
    • 1 tablespoon Chilli Powder
    • 2 tablespoon Coriander Powder
    • 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi
    • 1 teaspoon Cumin Powder / Jeeraka Podi
    • 2 teaspoon Garam Masala Powder
    • Salt to taste
    • 500 gram with bone Chicken
    • 1 cup Water
    • 3 tablespoon finely chopped Coriander Leaves
    • For Roasting & Grinding:
    • 1 teaspoon Oil
    • 1 tablespoon Fennel Seeds / Sombu / Saunf
    • 3 cm stick Cinnamon Stick
    • 5 Cardamom Pods / Yelakai
    • 5 Cloves / Krambu
    • 15 Shallots / Sambar Onion
    • 4 cm piece Ginger
    • 6 to 8 fat cloves Garlic
    • 1.5 cup grated Fresh Coconut

    Instructions

    Varutharacha Chicken Curry Recipe step by step picture

     
    Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add in sliced onions
    cook till golden
    add in ginger garlic paste

    now goes salt and spice powders

    mix well
     
    add tomatoes and mix well
    add in chicken
    mix well
    pour water and pressure cook
    Pressure cook..
    While chicken is cooking make masala..
     Heat a teaspoon of oil
    Add in fennel seeds, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, 
    fry it for a min
    add in peeled shallots
    and some ginger garlic paste
    add in grated coconut
    roast it
    let it get brown
    allow this to cool down
    add it to blender
    make into a smooth puree..set this aside
    Now chicken is done
    add the ground masala
    mix well and simmer for a while
    done
    add chopped coriander leaves
    serve

      I made this curry on Sunday . It came out good, but felt little more onion taste becoz while grinding & roasting twice onions are used . But the dish was tasty , my hubby liked it . Thanx Aarthi for the recipie
