Amma's Pudhina Thogayal / Mint Thogayal / Mint Chutney With Coconut

This is my mom's secret mint chutney recipe. This is one of my absolute favorite recipe. This thogayal is a thickish one, taste great when mixed with hot rice or served with dosa or idli. This taste sweet and spicy at the same time. Last week she made this and i stood beside the stove and clicked the pics.

So here you go to the recipe.

Preparation Time: 5 mins
Cooking Time: 8 to 10 mins
Serves : 5 to 6


Mint Leaves - 2 cups packed (Mom added some coriander leaves too)
Salt to taste
Sugar - 1 tsp

For Roasting & Grinding:
Toor Dal / Tuvaram paruppu- 1 tblspn
Urad dal / Ulundam paruppu - 1 tblspn
Dry Red Chilli - 2
Coconut - 1/2 cup
Garlic - 1 clove
Tamarind - 1 small piece


Take all the roasting ingredients except tamarind and roast them in a dry pan for 3 to 4 mins.

Now add in mint leaves and saute them till they are wilted. 

Add in tamarind and mix them well.

Add in salt and sugar and toss well.

Take this in a blender and add very little water to make into a thick chutney.

Serve with rice, dosa or idli.


Take all your roasting ingredients

Add them to a dry kadai

Roast them till they turn light golden

Add in a bunch of mint leaves

Saute them well

Add a dash of tamarind

And some salt

Along with a spoonful of sugar

Mix them well

Add it to the blender

Make into a fine puree

  2. Are you using peppermint or spearmint? Just in case, triangular leaves is peppermint and round leaves is spearmint.

  3. How long will these stay without getting spoilt? I was wondering if it will last a week or more in the fridge!!
