    Tomato Thokku Recipe

    I love making pickles, because they transform any simple meal into a tasty one. Whenever i don't have time to make lunch, i used to have a pile of rice, curd and pickles. YUM YUM.

    This is a spicy delicious pickle made using tomatoes. It is easy to make and can be store for quite a long time. Hope you will give this a try and let me know how it turns out for you.

    Ingredients for Tomato Thokku

    • Tomato
    • Tamarind
    • Gingelly Oil
    • Salt
    • Chilli Powder
    • Mustard Seeds
    • Urad dal
    • Jaggery
    • Asafoetida

    How to Make Thakkali Thokku

    • Heat ¼ cup oil in a kadai, add in tomatoes, tamarind, salt and mix well. cover and cook till it softens.
    • Keep cooking till oil separates. Cool it down and take it in a blender, puree till coarse.
    • Heat ¼ cup of oil in the same pan, add mustard, urad dal and asafoetida and let it sizzle.
    • Add the tomato puree, add in chilli powder and cook till oil separates.
    • Cool it down.
    • Store in an air tight container in fridge.

    Ingredients
      

    • Tomato - 8 large chopped
    • Tamarind - 1 lemon size
    • Gingelly Oil - ¼ cup + ¼ cup
    • Salt to taste
    • Chilli Powder - 2 tblspn
    • Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
    • Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 1 tsp
    • Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi - ¼ tsp

    Instructions
     

    • Heat ¼ cup oil in a kadai, add in tomatoes, tamarind, salt and mix well. cover and cook till it softens.
    • Keep cooking till oil separates. Cool it down and take it in a blender, puree till coarse.

    Andhra Tomato Thokku with Step by Step Pictures

    Take tomatoes and wash well
    Chop it up
    heat oil in a kadai, add in tomatoes
    add in tamarind
    mix well
    cover and cook till it softens
    cook till oil separates 
    add salt 
    mix well
    cook till oil separates
    now it is done
    take it in a blender
    puree till smooth
    heat oil in a pan, crackle mustard and urad dal
    add asafoetida 
    tomato puree
    add in chilli powder
    mix well
    cook till it thickens
    now oil has separates
    cool it down, store it in a clean jar

    This is perfect with curd rice. You can store it for so many days. I would advise to store this in fridge and use it. Please try this and let me know what you think.

    Ingredients
      

    • Tomato-10 pureed
    • Red chilli powder- ½ cup
    • Coriander powder- ¼ cup
    • Jaggery / Sarkarai you could use sugar- ½ cup
    • Salt to taste
    • Oil- ½ cup + ½ cup
    • Mustard seeds /Kaduku-1 tblpsn
    • Cumin seeds / Jeerakam-1 tblspn
    • Dry red chilli-5
    • Asafoetida / Kaya podi-1 tsp
    • Curry leaves-a handful

    Instructions
     

    • In a kadai add ½ cup of oil and pour in the tomato puree.let it come to a boil..Cook for 15-20 min until thickened.
    • Add in red chilli powder,coriander powder,jaggery.salt and mix well.
    • Make the seasoning by heating oil and crackling some mustard seeds,cumin seeds,asafoetida,dry red chilli,curry leaves..
    • Pour this into the tomato mixture and mix well.
    • Let this cool down and put this into the clean jar and store in fridge.
