And this honey chilli potato I've made several times and air frying the potatoes gives the perfect crispy texture and still soaks up the rich sauce flavours beautifully.

    About Honey Chilli Potato

Honey chilli potato is a popular Indo Chinese starter where the fried potato are tossed in a sticky, glossy sauce. In this version, the potatoes are air-fried instead of deep frying, which makes them light but still stay perfectly crispy.

The secret to making the best chilli potato is getting the potatoes crispy before adding in the sauce. When the potatoes are cooked right, they stay crunchy and don't turn soggy even after tossing in the sauce.

Chilli potato is mostly spicy and tangy, this recipe is special because it has the addition of honey adds sweet and spicy note.

This version is also healthy and quicker because the potatoes are air fried. It uses less oil, fewer in calories and can be made in less than 30 minutes.

This honey chilli potato works great as a starter, evening snack or as a party appetizer. You can serve it dry or slightly saucy gravy style. Pair it with fried rice or noodles for a complete Indo Chinese meal.

    Ingredients

    • Potatoes : Potatoes are the star of this recipe. You can use any variety like russet potatoes or yukon gold for best taste.
    • Butter : Use unsalted butter or replace it with regular oil also.
    • Garlic : Freshly minced garlic is essential for the flavour.
    • Honey : Honey is the key ingredient that gives this sweet taste. You can use sugar if you don't prefer using honey.
    • Cornstarch : Cornstarch used to coat the potatoes and help them turn crispy when cooked.
    • Sauce : I used red chilli sauce, vinegar and ketchup to make the sauce.
    • Seasoning : Salt, chilli flakes is added.
    • Spring Onion : spring onion is mainly used for garnishing. You can sprinkle some sesame seeds.

    Step by Step Pictures

    Prepare Sauce

1)Take garlic, red chilli flakes, ketchup, vinegar, red chilli sauce, honey and butter.

2)Mix this well and heat until it comes to a full boil. Taste and add salt if needed. Set this aside till use.

    Prepare potatoes

3)Wash, peel and slice potatoes into french fries. Make sure you don't cut them too big.

4)Take the potatoes in a bowl and wash them in cold water to remove excess starch. Strain this potatoes through a colander and pat them dry completely.

5)Now take the potatoes in a bowl. Add salt, oil and cornstarch.

    6)coat the potatoes really well.

    Air frying potatoes

7)If you are going to deep fry, you can add them in hot oil and fry till golden and crispy. I prefer air frying my potatoes. Spread the potatoes in a parchment lined air fryer basket.

8)Place them in a 200 degree c air fryer and air fry for 30 to 35 minutes until golden and crispy. Flip them once inbetween around 15 minute mark so it gets evenly crispy.

    Making honey chilli potatoes

9)take the air fried crispy potatoes in a bowl, add the prepared cooled sauce over the potatoes.

10)Toss the potatoes with the sauce. Add spring onions and mix. Serve immediately.

    Expert Tips

    • Make sure the potatoes are evenly sliced and pat dried completely. Because moisture can make them soggy instead of turning crispy.
    • If you prefer sauce or gravy style, add cornflour slurry into the base. This will thicken the sauce and still taste delicious.
    • Let the sauce slightly cool before adding the fried potatoes. Too hot sauce can make them lose crunch.
    • Top it off with sesame seeds for extra crunch and flavour.

    Storage & Serving

Honey chilli potato tastes best when served immediately after tossing. Serve this chilli potato as a starter, evening snack or as a party appetizer.

Pair it with Indo Chinese recipes like veg fried rice, hakka noodles, schezwan noodles, garlic fried rice, egg fried rice of your choice. It makes a wholesome and satisfying meal.

    FAQ

Can I deep fry the potatoes?

Yes, you can. Deep frying the potatoes also gives you the crispy texture and taste.

Why doesn't my potato look crispy after air frying?

Well, this happens if the potatoes are too wet or crowded while placed inside the air fryer basket. Pat dry the potatoes after cleaning and place them in a single layer in the airfryer so they cook evenly and crispy.

Can I add vegetables to the sauce base?

Absolutely ! You can add onion and capsicum for extra flavour and crunch.

What is the difference between chilli potato and honey chilli potato?

Well, both dishes use a similar sauce base. The key difference is honey. In honey chilli potato, honey is added to give a slight sweet taste and a glossy, shiny look.
