Can you believe that you can make a pizza base at home. Just by using basic pantry ingredients like flour, yeast, sugar, oil and salt you can prepare the dough, store it and use it whenever needed. Making pizza at home is always extra special and it all starts with a good base. I love how this homemade pizza base turned out so simple, fresh and easy to make. Once you try this homemade version, you'll never buy the store bought readymade base again!

How to Make Pizza Base at Home

I used buy pizza base from shops and keep that in fridge. Whenever I need to make a quick dinner or want to fix some urgent hunger strike, I spread tomato sauce, veggies, cheese and pop this in microwave for a minute. Pizza is ready!

But later I came to know that making pizza base at home is not that difficult. All you need is your basic pizza dough and you can make a whole batch of pizza base right in your kitchen. I made this pizza base from my basic no fail pizza dough recipe.

    About Pizza Base

Pizza base is the heart of any pizza and this homemade version is half cooked base, so you can make your pizza at home in less than 20 minutes.

Just take the base, spread sauce, toppings, sprinkle a generous amount of cheese, then bake and your pizza is ready to enjoy anytime !

This is honestly one of the easiest pizza base recipes you'll ever make. It requires a few basic ingredients like flour, oil and yeast. The pizza base works perfectly in the oven, microwave, cast iron or in tawa.

You can add whole wheat flour or millet flour instead of all purpose flour for a healthy twist. It makes the base more nutritious and light.

The dough is a versatile one that you can use to make bun, calzones or other baked recipes. If you prefer the instant version, I've already shared an instant yeast free pizza dough recipe on my blog.

A good pizza starts with a good crust and this base gives you soft inside with a light, crispy bottom when baked. It is perfect to use up for recipes like cheese burst pizza, vegetable pizza, chicken pizza and many more.

    Ingredients

    • All purpose flour : This is the main ingredient that forms the structure of the pizza. It gives the dough a soft, chewy texture and creates the classic restaurant style crust. For a healthier version, you can substitute with whole wheat flour.
    • Dry yeast : Yeast helps the dough to rise and makes the base light and airy. It creates tiny air pockets in the dough and gives a fluffy texture.
    • Sugar : Sugar helps to activate the yeast when mixed with warm water. It helps the crust to develop golden color while baking.
    • Salt : Salt balances the overall taste and flavour.
    • Water : Use lukewarm water to activate the yeast and knead the dough. Make sure it is not too hot, as it can kill the yeast.
    • Olive oil : Olive oil adds mild Italian flavour and makes a soft dough.

    Step by Step Pictures

    Activating Yeast

1)Take yeast, sugar in a bowl. Instead of sugar you can use honey, you need some kind of sweetener to feed the yeast.

2)Pour luke warm water over the yeast.

3)Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until the yeast bloom up. It will get foamy and frothy.

    Kneading Dough

4)Add in plain flour to the yeast water. Instead of plain flour, you can use whole wheat flour too.

    5)Add in salt to taste.

6)I like to use a spoon or fork to mix it into the yeast water first until the dough starts to form.

7)Drizzle in olive oil and mix well.

8)Knead it well and coat the dough with olive oil.

    Proofing

9)Cover the bowl with a plastic wrap and allow the dough to rest and rise.

10)It will start to get double in size.

11)Now the dough has risen well. Slowly remove the dough from the bowl and take it on a work surface.

    Shaping pizza base

12)Divide the dough into required portions. You can make one big base, or multiple individual serving size.

13)Roll each dough into circle. Roll them slightly thin, because they will rise when cooking.

14)I like to make perfect round circle. So i used a bowl to cut out even size.

15)Perfect mini pizza base. Sprinkle a tray or plate with some flour and place this on it.

16)Now allow this to rest for 10 to 15 minutes. Now prick with fork all over it so it doesn't puff up when cooking.

    Cooking pizza base

17)Place the base on a pan on low heat.

18)Cover and cook on low heat for 3 to 5 minutes.

19)You will see them puff up like this.

20)Flip and cook uncovered for 2 more minutes.

21)Pizza base ready. Allow them to cool, store in a ziploc bag until ready to use.

    Expert Tips

    • After mixing yeast with water and sugar, let it bloom naturally before adding the flour.
    • Cover the dough and let it rest until it doubles in size.
    • Always use lukewarm water to activate the yeast. If it's too hot it can kill the yeast and rising won't happen.
    • Keep the flame on low and cook the rolled pizza base.
    • Prick the rolled pizza base with a fork. This prevents air bubbles forming and helps to create an even crust pizza.
    • You can roll the dough thinner for crispier crust or slightly thick for a soft base.

    Storage & Serving

Let the cooked base pizza completely cool before storing. Stack pizza base with parchment paper in between and put them in an airtight container. It stays good in the refrigerator for a week and for longer storage it can be freezed for a month.

This homemade pizza base is perfect for making recipes like spicy chicken pizza, cheese burst pizza, vegetable pizza, or any other favourite pizza of your choice.

    FAQ

Can I use the dough to make thin crust pizza?

Absolutely ! Just simply roll the dough as thin as you want for a crustier pizza and prick it with a fork to prevent air bubbles.

    Why isn't my dough rising?

This happens when the yeast is old, or if the water is cold or too hot. Always proof the dry yeast by adding lukewarm water before mixing the flour.

Can I add herbs to the dough ?

Absolutely ! You can enhance the flavour of the dough by adding herbs and spices like oregano, garlic powder, onion powder or chilli flakes to the dough.

      Dear Aarthi,

Thanks alot for another mouth watering recipe 🙂 I tried it last evening and it was awesome. I have couple of queries-
      1. The pizza base had smell of yeast which was over-powering. When I had allowed the dough to rise, it covered my entire big bowl. It did rise more than double. Should I reduce the dose of yeast.

      2. Also, can I use dry yeast as a rising agent in my rava idlis and uttapams batter.

      Thanks
