    South Indian Paruppu Kuzhambu Recipe with step by step pictures. This is easy to make one pot kuzhambu recipe which is simple, healthy and protein rich.

     

    South Indian Paruppu Kuzhambu

    When we think of India,mainly south india the thing which gets into your mind is dal. India is known for their different types of dal. Dals are one of the staple dish all over india. Dals are prepared different ways in different region. In south india they use lot of curry leaves and tamarind for sour taste,In the north they use lots of onions and tomato for sour taste….This dish is very easy and simple dish to make.

    Ingredients for South Indian Paruppu Kuzhambu

    • Toor Dal - ½ cup
    • Tomato-1 chopped
    • Garlic - 4 cloves peeled
    • Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - 1 tsp
    • Water - 1.5 cup
    • Salt-to taste
    • Coriander leaves- a handful finely chopped

    For Grinding:

    • Coconut - ½ cup
    • Green chilli -2
    • Cumin seeds / Jeerakam -1 tsp

    For Seasoning:

    • Ghee or Oil -1 tbsp
    • Mustard seeds - 1tsp
    • Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya podi - ¼ tsp
    • Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
     
    This is one of the basic dal in south india. This is really very mild and flavourful dal recipe,Since it is so mild in taste it goes extremely well with the spicy potato chettinad. So please give this a go and let me know what you think.

    How to Make South Indian Paruppu Kuzhambu

    1. Take the grinding ingredients in a mixer and grind it into a smooth paste.
    2. Wash toor dal well. Take dal, water, tomato, garlic, turmeric powder in a pressure cooker.
    3. Cover and pressure cook for 3 whistle. Turn off the flame and let the steam go all by itself.
    4. Now open the cooker and mash the dal roughly.
    5. Add in the ground paste and mix well.Let it come to a boil again.Season with salt.
    6. Now in a small pan,Heat ghee and add in the mustard seeds, asafoetida and curry leaves. Now pour this tadka into the dal and mix well.
    7. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with rice.

    Ingredients
      

    • ½ cup Toor Dal
    • 1 Tomato chopped
    • 4 cloves Garlic peeled
    • 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi
    • 1.5 cup Water
    • Salt-to taste
    • Coriander leaves- a handful finely chopped
    • For Grinding:
    • ½ cup Coconut
    • 2 Green chilli
    • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds / Jeerakam
    • For Seasoning:
    • 1 tablespoon Ghee or Oil
    • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
    • ¼ teaspoon Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya podi
    • 1 sprig Curry Leaves

    South Indian Paruppu Kuzhambu Recipe Step by Step

    First lets make the masala..Take coconut in a blender
    add in green chillies
    and cumin seeds
    make it into a smooth paste
    Now take washed toor dal in a pressure cooker
    cover with water, add in garlic
    and some tomatoes
    add in turmeric powder
    cover and pressure cooker
    now dal is cooked
    mash it roughly
    add in ground masala
    mix well
    add in salt
    simmer for few mins
    heat oil or ghee in a pan
    add in mustard seeds
    add in asafoetida
    and some curry leaves
    fry them and pour it into the dal
    mix well
    add in lots of chopped coriander leaves
    Mix well
