Serves : 4
For Saiva Fish:
Cow Peas / Thatta Payir - 1 cup
Garlic - 2 cloves
Chilli Powder - 2 tsp
Fennel Seeds / Sombu / Saunf - 1 tsp
Salt to taste
For Kulambu:
Oil - 2 tblspn + 2 tblspn
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1tsp
Fenugreek Seeds / Methi / Vendayam - ¼ tsp
Fennel Seeds / Sombu / Saunf - ½ tsp
Curry leaves a spring
Shallots / Sambar Onion - 10 chopped finely
Green Chillies - 2
Tomatoes - 1 large chopped finely
Chilli Powder - 2 tsp
Coriander Powder / Malli Podi - 1.5 tblspn
Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - 1 tsp
Tamarind Pulp - 3 tblspn
Water - 2 to 3 cups
Salt to taste
Method:
Take cow peas, soak them overnight. Drain them and add it to blender. Add other ingredients and make it into a coarse puree.
Spread this over some aluminium foil or banana leaf and steam them for 15 to 20 mins. Remove them and cut into strips. Pan fry them in oil and set aside.
Now add in onions, green chillies and tomatoes. Season with salt and cook till it turns mushy.
Now add in tamarind pulp and water. Bring it to a boil.
Add in the fried pieces and simmer it for 15 mins.
Serve.
Start by soaking cow peas overnight |
take it in a blender |
add in garlic |
and some fennel seeds |
add in little chilli powder |
add in little salt and puree them |
make it into a coarse puree |
spoon this over some foil |
spread it evenly |
fold it over |
make one more |
heat a steamer |
place the package in a steamer |
cover and steam |
unwrap it |
cut into slices |
heat oil in a pan |
pan fry them |
toast them till golden |
remove them and set aside |
Take all your ingredients for kulambu |
Heat oil in a pan |
add in mustard and fenugreek seeds |
add in fennel seeds |
add in curryleaves |
add in onions, garlic, green chillies |
mix well..add some salt |
saute till golden |
add in tomatoes |
mix well |
cook till tomatoes turn mushy |
add in chilli, coriander and turmeric powder |
mix well |
add in tamarind pulp |
add water |
bring it to boil |
add in the fried pieces |
simmer it for a while |
done |

When I saw the words, "Saiva" and "Meen" together in the title, I thought, you must be kidding me! Looks good! Kudos on using a clay pan 🙂. It may add a bit of a earthy flavor to the dish.

I do a lot of south indian cooking and I've been inspired to try out the various dishes and they've been really yummy ! Really good website you have and great recipes esp like this saiva meen post :)! Its a great site however one thing that's a put off for me is..maybe its just with me -Recently all the ads that run right across recipes and your page and i can hardly read the recipe and then out of sheer annoyance, I just close the whole page down and search elsewhere for recipes. the momen I close one ad another couple more pop up and takes away all the joy of reading your webpage..just thought i must let you know .
