Chicken Dalcha Recipe

Dalcha is a gravy dish which has any meat which is cooked with dal and veggies in it. It is more like a meat sambar. This is a muslim recipe and it is normally served with ghee rice or any mild pulav.

Even though the ingredients list is quite long and it has so many component in it. But over all it is a simple curry to make. I hope you will give this a try and let me know how it turns out for you..
Preparation Time: 15 mins
Cooking Time : 45 mins to 1 hour
Serves : 7 to 10

Ingredients:
Oil – 1 tblspn
Ghee – 1 tblspn
Cinnamon / Pattai – 4 cm piece
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam – 2 tsp
Cardamom / Yalakai – 4
Cloves / Krambu – 4
Onion – 2 large sliced thinly
Ginger Garlic Paste – 2 tblspn
Tomatoes – 2 large sliced thinly
Curry Leaves – a handful
Green Chillies – 3 slit
Chilli Powder – 2 tsp
Coriander Powder – 2 tblspn
Cumin Powder – 2 tsp
Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi – 1 tsp
Pepper Powder – 1 tsp
Garam Masala Powder – 1 tblspn
Fennel Seed Powder / Saunf / Sombu – 1 tblspn
Salt to taste
Mint Leaves – 1/2 cup chopped
Coriander Leaves – 1/2 cup chopped
Toor Dal / Tuvaram paruppu – 3/4 cup 
Chicken – 1 kg with bone
Raw Banana – 1 peeled and cubed
Potato – 2 medium size peeled and cubed
Brinjal – 2 cubed
Carrot – 1 cubed
Raw Mango – 1 medium size cubed
Tamarind Pulp – 2 to 3 tblspn
Method:
Pressure cook toor dal with 3 cup of water for 3 whistle, simmer the flame and cook for 10 mins. Turn off the heat and let the steam escape all by itself. Open the cooker and mash the dal well. Set aside.
Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker, add in whole spices and saute for a min.
Add in onions, salt and cook the onions till light brown.
Add in Ginger garlic paste and saute for a min.
Add in tomatoes, curry leaves, green chillies and saute till the tomatoes turn mushy.
Add in all spice powders and mix well.
Add in chicken and toss well in the masala. Fry this for 5 mins till the chicken gets nice colour.
Add in coriander and mint leaves. Mix well.
Add in all veggies except mango and mix well.
Add in water and mix well. Cover and pressure cook for 2 whistle. Simmer the flame for 10 mins. Turn off the heat and let the steam go all by itself. Open the cooker and add in dal, mango, tamarind pulp.
Simmer this for 10 mins.

Add in more coriander leaves and mix well.

Serve with rice or pulav.

I used these veggies for this curry..I also added a carrot..

chop them into quite big chunks

Now take your other ingredients

I cooked some toor dal in a pressure cooker till it is mushy
Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker

Add in whole garam masala 

Add in sliced onions

Give a quick toss

Add in salt

cook till light golden

Add in ginger garlic paste

Saute till golden

Add in tomatoes, curry leaves and green chillies

Cook till the tomatoes turn mushy

Add in chilli and coriander powder

Add in turmeric, garam masala, cumin and pepper powder

Add in some fennel seed powder

Saute for a min

Add in chicken

toss well in the masala..Keep cooking till the chicken gets nice colour

Now add in mint leaves and coriander leaves

Mix well again

Add in all veggies except mango

mix well

Pour in water

give a stir

Pressure cook it for 2 whistle, simmer for 10 mins

Once the steam has gone by itself, open the cooker

Add in cooked dal

raw mango

some tamarind pulp

simmer for 10 mins

    Hi. I have bought dalcha masala. So what can i omit from your ingredients list? Keen to make veg dalcha on deepavali for my parents.
