    Fried Momos Recipe

One of my reader requested this recipe. I am happy that she did, so that I had a chance to make this recipe. I thought of making both version(fried and steamed), so that you can try anything as per your liking. Actually I loved the steamed one more than the fried one.

The recipe is so simple, tasty and perfect for any occasion. Whenever I host a party at home, I often prepare these fried momos or spring rolls because they are always a hit among everyone, right from kids to adults. It is truly a crowd pleaser recipe.

    About Fried Veg Momos

Veg fried momos are made with basic pantry ingredients like flour, a mix of colorful vegetables and spices. The vegetables are tossed with soy sauce, ajinomoto and pepper to create the lovely umami flavour and aroma.

Veg fried momos are perfect as an evening snack, party appetizer. They taste amazing when served hot with spicy chilli garlic sauce, tomato ketchup or schezwan sauce.

Once shaped, the momos are fried in hot oil until golden crispy and gives that irresistible street style taste and crunch.

The recipe is so easy and very versatile. You can prepare and shape the momos in advance and store them in the freezer for later use.

It can be deep fried for extra crispiness or if you prefer a lighter and healthier version, the momos can be shallow fried. You can easily customize the filling by adding paneer, corn, soya chunks, chicken or prawn instead of vegetables.

These crispy fried veg momos taste best when served hot with sweet chilli sauce, spicy chilli garlic sauce or even with tomato ketchup for a delicious snack.

    Ingredients

    • All purpose flour : This is used to make the momo dough. You can also replace it with whole wheat flour or use a mix of both as a healthy option.
    • Vegetables : Cabbage, capsicum, mushroom and spring onion are used for the filling. You can add any vegetables like carrots, beans too.
    • Ginger garlic paste : Ginger garlic paste adds a strong pungent aroma that enhances the taste of vegetable filling.
    • Soy sauce : Soy sauce enhances the overall flavour with its rich umami taste.
    • Seasoning : Salt added to bring out the flavours and pepper adds a mild heat to the vegetables. Ajinomoto ( MSG ) boosts extra umami flavour and gives the authentic street style momo flavour. It is completely optional and can be skipped if preferred.
    • Oil : Use any neutral oil for sauteing the vegetables and also for frying the momos.

    Step by Step Pictures

    Momo Dough

1)take plain flour, salt in a bowl. Instead of plain flour, for healthy alternative, you can use whole wheat flour.

2)Pour in water little at a time and make it into a slightly stiff dough.

3)Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour.

    Momo Filling

4)Now for filling, chop up vegetables into small pieces. I am using cabbage, spring onions, mushrooms and bell peppers. You can use carrots, beans also.

5)Heat oil in a pan. Once oil is hot, add in crushed garlic and ginger and stir fry for a minute. Add in all the chopped vegetables, season with salt, sugar and stir fry for couple of minutes. Now cover with lid and cook for 5 to 6 minutes until the vegetables get tender and cooked.

6)Add in black pepper powder, MSG (if using) and soy sauce. Stir fry for a minute. make sure any moisture is dried up.

7)Transfer the filling to a bowl and allow to cool completely.

    Shaping Momo

8)Divide the dough into small balls.

9)Take a portion of dough, dust with plain flour and roll into thin small circle using a rolling pin.

10)Spoon the vegetable filling in the center of the dough circle. Apply some water around the edges of the circle.

11)Start sealing from the sides of the dough. Make sure it is sealed well and you can twist and shape it.

12)Press and secure the sides of the momo.

13)Momos is shaped. you can shape the momos however you like. But ensure it is tightly sealed, so when you fry them, no fillings escape.

    14)Momos are shaped well.

    Frying Momos

15)Heat oil for deep frying, drop in the shaped momos in oil and deep fry till golden brown on both sides. It will take around 3 to 5 minutes.

16)Strain the momos onto some paper towel to remove excess oil.

17)Serve fried momos hot with spicy momo chutney.

18)These fried veg momos makes a perfect snack.

    Expert Tips

    • Saute the vegetables on high heat for about 2 minutes. As this helps them to stay crunchy without turning soggy.
    • Roll the dough as thin as possible so momos cook evenly and fry crispy outside.
    • Seal the edges tightly to prevent the filling from coming out while frying.
    • Make sure the oil is fully heated before adding the momos. This prevents them from absorbing excess oil.
    • Instead of deep frying, shallow fry the shaped momos in a pan by adding little oil. Flip and cook until it turns golden crispy.

    Storage & Serving

Store the assembled momos in an airtight container. They can be stored in the freezer for 2 weeks to a month. And fry them whenever you're ready to serve.

Serve this delicious veg fried momos hot with red chilli sauce, chilli garlic sauce, tomato ketchup or with any of your favourite dipping sauce.  Serve these momos along with fried rice, noodles or soup for a complete meal.

    FAQ

Can I make the momos ahead and fry later?

Absolutely ! You can prepare, shape the momos in advance and keep them refrigerated for a few hours or days. Fry them whenever ready to serve fresh.

Can I air fry instead of deep frying?

Yes, air frying is a lighter and healthier option. Brush a little oil on the momos, and cook until it turns crispy.

Can I use whole wheat flour instead of maida?

Yes, you can prepare the momo dough using whole wheat flour to make it light and healthy. Sometimes, using whole wheat flour can turn the outer cover dense, so roll it out as thin as possible. Or use a mix of both flour to keep the momo soft and crispy
