    How to Cook Millets with step by step pictures. This is a tutorial on how to cook millets. Learn how to cook siruthaniyam like Samai, Varagu, Thinai and Kuthiraivali.

    How to Cook Millets

    We used to have millets atleast once a week instead of rice. It is so healthy and can act as a great substitute for rice. You can cook this as normal rice and serve it with any spicy curries or kuzhambu. Hope you will give this a try and let me know how it turns out for you..

    Ingredients for Cook Millets

    • Millet - 1 cup (Samai, Varagu,Thinai or Kuthiraivali)
    • Water - 3 cups
    • Salt optional

    How to Cook Millets

    1. Measure your millets..Wash them well..I soak them for 5 mins in water, so any dirt will come on top, then i drain them and wash them well with lots of water.
    2. Take millets in a heavy bottom pan, cover with water. If you want add little salt.
    3. Bring it to a boil. Cover and simmer on the lowest flame for 15 mins.
    4. Now if you see the water must be absorbed by the millets. Fluff the millets gently with fork. Cover with lid and set aside for 10 mins.
    5. Now the millets must be fluffy.
    6. Serve.

    For making variety rice and fried rice. Use 1.5 cup to 2 cups of water.

    How to Cook Millets step by step picture 

    Here i have used Little millet / Samai
    Wash them well..I soak them for 5 mins in water, so any
     dirt will come on top, then i drain them and wash them well with lots of water.
    Drain them
    take it in a heavy bottom pan
    cover with water
    you can add pinch of salt if u need
    bring it to a boil
    cover with a plate and simmer
    now the rice has absorbed all the liquid
    fluff it lightly with a fork
    now it is fluffed up
    cover with a plate and set aside for 10 mins
    now the rice is done
    Serve with spicy curries

      If u are eating with spicy curries.then there is no use of eating millet for health cause.

      Atleast you will have that little advantage of not having with routine rice which has more glycemic index and less fiber.

      How to do that in pressure cooker.. What is the millet:water ratio and whistles for pressure cooker

        For 1.5 cup millet I use 2 cups of water. After the pressure is up in the cooker slow flame for 7 minutes. You will get perfect rice!

      Dear arthi madam,
      I saw your article and made millet rice to be mixed with curd for curd rice.this is for my wife who is diabetic but the millet is not cooked at all. Please let me know how to cook millet I will be very very grateful to you. God bless you Pl reply. We are pure vegetarian not even onion. Sesh
