    Nethili Maangai Kuzhambu

    Nethili Maangai Kuzhambu or Raw Mango Fish Curry is a spicy coconut based fish curry which not only taste amazing but is easy to make as well.

    About Nethili Maangai Kuzhambu

    Nethili Meen or Netholi Meen is part of the cuisine of the Indian and Southeast Asian marine regions. It is crisp-fried, and is used in fish-based culinary products like fish sauce or in curries. In Sri Lanka, this fish is dipped in a batter and coated with breadcrumbs or sooji and deep fried till crisp. Spicy version of this curry is made using coconut, chillies. It is called Kapsali | Verli in Konkani in Goa.

    Anchovies are coated in seasoned plain flour and deep fried till very crispy. This crispy snack enjoyed with drinks.

    Nethili Maangai Kuzhambu

    I made this using raw mangoes, chillies, coconut and anchovies. It is called as nethili maangai kuzhambu. On southern part of india we serve it with rice, roti, idli or dosa.

    This fish is small and very tender. Even the bones are very fragile. you can consume the whole fish.

    How to clean nethili meen?

    You can remove the head of the fish using your hands. Pull the head and probably the guts will come with it too. Tails of the anchovies fish can be kept as it is.

    Nethili Maangai Kuzhambu

    Anchovies fish curry is a easy curry which you could make in few minutes. You will be needing coconut, chillies, cumin seeds, curry leaves, coconut oil, tamarind and few whole spices.

    Nethili Meen Maangai Kuzhambu Recipe

    • Grind coconut, dry chillies, turmeric, green chillies, cumin seeds together to a smooth paste.
    • Heat oil in a kadai. Add in mustard, cumin, fenugreek and curry leaves.
    • Throw in raw mangoes.
    • Pour in tamarind water and mix well. Boil for 2 mins.
    • Add in coconut masala and mix well.
    • Add in fish and mix gently.
    • Cook covered for 5 to 7 mins.
    • Serve with steamed rice or roti.

    Spicy nethili maangai kuzhambu is a spicy coconut based fish curry which goes well with rice or roti.

    Ingredients
      

    • 500 grams Anchovies | Nethili Fish
    • 2 cups Fresh Coconut
    • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
    • 6 no Dry red chillies
    • 5 no Green Chillies
    • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
    • Tamarind lemon size
    • 1 Raw mango peeled and sliced
    • 4 tablespoon Coconut Oil
    • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
    • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
    • 1 handful Curry leaves
    • ¼ teaspoon Fenugreek seeds

    Instructions
     

    • Grind coconut, dry chillies, turmeric, green chillies, cumin seeds together to a smooth paste.
    • Heat oil in a kadai. Add in mustard, cumin, fenugreek and curry leaves.
    • Add in mango and mix well.
    • Add in tamarind water and mix well. Boil for 2 mins.
    • Add in coconut masala and mix well.
    • Add in fish and mix gently.
    • Cook covered for 5 to 7 mins.
    • Serve

    Notes

    • Instead of green chillies, you can use dry red chillies.
    • If you are not using raw mangoes, use more tamarind. 
    • I used anchovies, you can use any fish as you prefer.

    Pictorial:

    1)Take coconut, green chillies and dry red chillies in a blender

    2)Add in cumin seeds

    3)Add in chilli powder.

    4)Add in turmeric powder. Grind to a smooth paste

    5)Heat coconut oil in a pot.

    5)Add in fenugreek seeds

    6)Add in mustard seeds

    7)Add in curry leaves

    8)Add in sliced mangoes

    9)Toss well in the oil.

    10)Add in tamarind water and let it boil for 2 mins.

    11)Add in coconut masala.

    12)Add salt

    13)Mix well

    14)Add in cleaned anchovies.

    15)Mix well

    16)Mix well.

    17)Cover and simmer the flame.

    18)Now curry is cooked.

    19)Serve.

      Hi Aarthi,
      You have added dry red chilli, green chilli along with coconut to make a paste. What is that red chilli powder kind of thing you added along with turmeric powder in the mixie jar? Also no need for Coriander powder for this curry? Kindly clarify dear.
