    Spicy Pepper Mutton Curry Recipe with Step by Step Pictures. Mutton Pepper Gravy or Pepper Mutton Curry, whichever way you call them. These are delicious spicy lamb curry which is made using plenty of onions, shallots, ginger, garlic, tomatoes and freshly roasted spices.

    Mutton Pepper Gravy

    Pepper mutton curry which is super flavourful and spicy. This has a pop of sweetness coming from the small onions. Delicious pepper mutton curry which taste amazing with roti, rice or pulao.

    It's been a while since i shared any mutton gravy recipe. This is the dish which i made for the get together and everyone loved it. They started asking me for the recipe. This is an easy recipe to make, you don't need much work at all. The curry also was very creamy, rich and tasty.

    About this Recipe

    Mutton Pepper Gravy or Pepper Mutton Curry, whichever way you call them. These are delicious spicy lamb curry which is made using plenty of onions, shallots, ginger, garlic, tomatoes and freshly roasted spices.

    Mutton pepper chettinad style taste fiery with rice, roti or pulao. This gravy is cooked in pressure cooker so it can be made in half the time. If you don't have pressure cooker, you can cook this in a casserole low and slow.

    The addition of roasted pepper and fennel seeds powder in the end makes it fiery and tasty.

    Ingredients for Pepper Mutton Gravy

    • Oil - 4 tblsp
    • Cumin Seeds - 1tsp
    • Cinnamon / Pattai - 1 stick
    • Cardamom - 2
    • Onion - 2 large sliced
    • Ginger Garlic Paste - 2 tblsp
    • Tomato - 2 chopped finely
    • Coriander Powder - 2 tblsp
    • Chilli Powder - 2 tsp
    • Cumin Powder - 1 tsp
    • Garam Masala Powder - 1 tsp
    • Salt to taste
    • Mutton - 500 grams
    • Fennel Seeds - 2 tsp 
    • Black Pepper - 2 tsp

    How to Make Pepper Mutton Gravy

    1. Dry roast pepper and fennel till light golden. Cool it down and grind to a fine powder.
    2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add cinnamon, cardamom and cumin. Let it sizzle.
    3. Add in onions and cook till light golden. Add in ginger garlic paste and mix well.
    4. Add in tomatoes and cook till mushy.
    5. Take half of the tomato onion mix and puree finely. Add it back into the cooker.
    6. Add in salt and spice powders except the freshly roasted ones and mix well.
    7.  mutton and mix well.
    8. Cover and pressure cook for 5 to 6 whistle. Simmer for 5 mins. Turn off the heat and let the steam escape by itself.
    9. Open the cooker, add more water and bring it to a boil. add the freshly roasted spices. Mix well.
    10. Serve.

    Ingredients
      

    • Coconut Oil - ¼ cup
    • Fennel seeds / Sombu / Saunf - 1 tsp
    • Cardamom / Yelakai - 4
    • Cloves / Krambu - 4
    • Bay Leaf - 1
    • Fennel Seeds / Saunf / Sombu - 1 tsp
    • Cinnamon / Pattai - 1 stick
    • Onion - 3 large chopped finely
    • Green Chillies - 4
    • Tomato - 2 chopped finely
    • Ginger Garlic Paste - 2 tblsp
    • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
    • Coriander powder - 2 tblsp
    • Chilli Powder - 2 tblsp
    • Cumin Powder - 2 tsp
    • Garam masala powder - 1 tblsp
    • Mutton - 1 kg chopped
    • Salt to taste
    • Whole black pepper - 1 tblsp
    • Fennel seeds / Sombu / Saunf - 2 tsp
    • Small onion / Shallots - 15 peeled
    • Curry leaves a handful

    Instructions
     

    • Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add in whole spices and let them sizzle.
    • Add in Onions and cook till golden. Add in ginger garlic paste and turmeric powder and mix well.
    • Add in mutton pieces and saute till it is well seared. It will take around 10 mins.
    • Now add in tomatoes and spice powders and salt. Cook that for 5 mins.
    • Add in water and cover and cook for 4 whistle. Now let the pressure escape by itself.
    • Open the cooker and add in shallots and curry leaves and simmer for 10 mins.
    • Dry toast pepper and fennel. Grind till fine.
    • Once the shallots is cooked, add the pepper mix and mix well.
    • Take it off the heat.
    • Serve.

    Version 1: Pepper Mutton Gravy Step by Step

    1)Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add in whole spices.

    2)Add in chopped onions

    3)Saute till golden.Add in ginger garlic paste

    4)Add turmeric powder

    5)Add in mutton pieces

    6)Stir fry the mutton in the oil for around 10 to 15 mins

    7)The mutton pieces are well seared

    8)Add in spice powders

    9)Add green chillies and mix well

    10)Add tomatoes

    11)Add salt

    12)Cook for 2 mins. Add in water. Add very little water

    13)Mix well

    14)Cover and pressure cook

    15)Dry roast, pepper and fennel seeds

    16)Cook till it is toasted

    17)Take it in a jar

    18)Powder till fine

    19)Now the pressure is released

    20)Add in small onions and curry leaves

    21)Cook for 10 mins

    22)Now shallots is cooked

    23)Add powdered spice

    24)Done

    25)Serve

    2)Roast till golden brown

    3)Cool it down, take it in a blender

    4)Powder it fine

    5)Heat oil in a pressure cooker

    6)Add cumin, cardamom and cinnamon

    7)Add in onions

    8)Cook till golden

    9)Add in ginger garlic paste

    10)Saute for a min

    11)Add in tomatoes

    12)Mix well

    14)Cook till mushy

    15)Take half of the mix in a blender

    16)Puree till smooth

    17)Add it into the pan

    18)Mix well

    19)Add in spice powders

    20)Mix well
    21)Add in salt

    22)Add in mutton pieces

    23)Mix well

    24)Cover and cook

    25)Done

    26)Add in water

    27)Bring it to a boil

    28)Add in pepper and fennel powder

    29)Mixwell

    30) Serve
