    Potato Poriyal Recipe with step by step pictures. Simple potato poriyal which is easy to make and goes well with rice.

     

    Potato Poriyal Recipe

    This is one dish which i make at least once a week. Actually I would say at least twice a week. Because hubby loves it, i love it and every one in the family loves it. This taste great with rice, rasam, sambar rice, curd rice or anything you name it.

    Ingredients for Potato poriyal

    • Potatoes - 4 large peeled and cubed
    • Oil - 3 tblspn
    • Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
    • Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 1 tsp
    • Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi - a pinch
    • Curry leaves a handful
    • Salt to taste
    • Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - 1 tsp
    • Chilli Powder - 1 tblspn or to taste
    • Garam Masala Powder - 1 tsp (Optional)
    • Water a splash

    How to Make Potato poriyal

    1. Chop up peeled potatoes, wash them in water and drain them.
    2. Heat oil in a pan, add in mustard, urad dal, asafoetida, curry leaves and let them sizzle.
    3. Now add in potatoes and toss well. Sprinkle in salt and turmeric and mix well.
    4. Simmer the flame to a low and cover with a lid, cook it for 5 mins or so.
    5. Now open the lid and add a splash of water if it is sticking. Cover and cook for 8 to 10 mins.
    6. Now open the lid, increase the heat and add in chilli powder, garam masala powder and fry it in oil. till it gets nice colour.
    7. Serve with rice.

    Potato Poriyal Recipe Step by Step

     
    Take your potatoes

     

    peel them

     

    slice little thick

     

    cut into french fries like

     

    cube it

     

    wash it in water to remove excess starch

     

     

     

    drain them

     

    heat oil in a pan, add in mustard, urad dal and curry leaves

     

    add in asafoetida

     

    mix well

     

    add in the potatoes

     

    toss well

     

    sprinkle salt and turmeric powder

     

    toss well

     

    cover and cook for 5 mins

     

    now if the potatoes are getting too dry and sticking to the pan

     

    add just a splash of water

     

    Cover and cook till potatoes are done

     

    Now it is cooked

     

    add in chilli powder

     

    garam masala powder

     

    toss well and brown it lightly

     

    done
