Spicy Onion Fish Curry Recipe / No Coconut Fish Curry Recipe

Adding coconut to fish curry makes delicious curry, but recently i started experimenting a lot to find the perfect no coconut fish curry. Couple weeks back i made a fish curry with lots of shallots, onions and curry leaves..It gave the thickness to the fish curry, flavour to it and tasted yummy.

I made this for lunch and served it with roti. It was yummy..Hope you will give this a try and let me know how it turned out for you..
Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 35 to 40 mins
Serves : 5 to 6

Ingredients:Oil – 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku – 1 tsp
Fenugreek Seeds / Vendayam / Methi – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves a sprig
Chilli Powder – 2 tsp or to taste
Coriander Powder / Malli Podi – 2 tblspn
Brinjal – 1 large sliced into long slices
Fish Pieces – 500 grams (i used sardine)
Tamarind Pulp – 2 to 3 tblspn or to taste
Water as needed


For Masala:
Oil – 2 tsp
Shallots / Sambar Onion / Chinna Ulli – 25 to 30 peeled
Onion – 1 large sliced
Curry leaves a big handful
Turmeirc Powder / Manjal Podi – 1 tsp
Salt to taste


Method:Heat oil in a pan, add in shallots, onion, curry leaves, salt and turmeric powder and saute for 8 to 10 mins till it is translucent and light golden.

Now take it in a blender and make it into a fine puree.

Heat oil in a kadai. Add in fenugreek and mustard seeds. Add in curry leaves and saute for a min.

Add in the pureed masala and cook till oil separates from it.

Add in chilli and coriander powder and mix well.

Now add in brinjal and toss well. Add in water and tamarind pulp, mix well. Cook till brinjal is cooked.

Now add in the fish pieces and cook till the fish is done.

Serve with rice.

Take all your ingredients
Heat some oil in a pot
Add in a good amount of peeled shallots or sambar onions
add in sliced onions
add a good amount of curry leaves
sprinkle in some salt and turmeric powder
saute well
Cook till the onions gets soft and a little colour
add in tomatoes
saute well
take this in a blender
make it into a fine puree
Now in the same pan, add a touch of oil
crackle some mustard and fenugreek seeds
add in curry leaves
saute for a min
add in pureed masala
now add in some chilli powder and coriander powder
mix well
cook till oil separates
add in sliced brinjal
Mix well
Add in tamarind pulp
pour in water
mix well and cook till brinjal is cooked
Add in your fish pieces, i used sardine / chala meen
mix well and cook till fish is done
Curry done
Serve..
